This book is such a downer. Tess is put in horrible circumstances over and over she does her best but it never is quite enough to make her and her family's lives better until she is put to death for murder.

So disturbingly wrong on so many levels. Disliked it so bad that I think it scarred me for all HR novels I might read in the future.
The sentence from on of many introductions comes to mind - reads like a snuff film...

My "centuries old read" for the year. I never expected to like it, but I loved the tragedy of it. 2017 me feels so bad for 1800's Tess that I wanted to be her friend that would advise her to leave the criminal and the idiot and just go on with her life far far away. It is so sad that centuries ago raped women are reduced to shame when in fact they are the ones who were wronged. Rape must have been rampant during their time. I shudder at the thought, and I am glad to live in the present. This book was beautifully written and so emotional. I think this is also required reading for other schools. Look at that, I hit two birds with one stone :-)

Wow, okay, I don't know what to make of the ending. Review to come maybe.

I hated it. It may have been the most depressing thing I've ever read. It was really good, but I say 0/10 do not recommend. Run away now before u get sucked in because it will not go well for you. I kept holding out thinking it was going to get less depressing but it did NOT.
