1,5⭐ - not good
I didn't like anything here... Thomas Hardy is defenitely not the author for me. Second book already I didn't like from him....
Only thing I liked, is the old times feel that I love in classics. That's it.

I didn't realise it was possible to hate and love a book this much at the same time.
This was such a stressful reading experience. I'm not sure I've ever shouted so much whilst reading or hated a character as much as I despite Alec D'Urberville. Nor has a book ever made the statement 'men are trash' hit quite so hard. This book made me so angry at the way women were treated in the past, yes but also at how much of the toxic masculinity, sexism and victim blaming back then is still very much present in today's society.
So yeah, I hate so much about the plot of this book and honestly? I would feel strange if I didn't. And yet, I loved it so much. I loved how angry it made me. I loved how stressed I was. I loved Tess, so very much and just kept wishing she'd been born in an era that would have been somewhat kinder to her. (I know she's fictional and this isn't possible but damn, this girl could not catch a single break.) All in all, this was a wholly immersive reading experience and one I won't be forgetting any time soon.
TW: rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment

A heartbreakingly tragic criticism of the hypocrisy of the victorian patriarchy, that is full of misery and contrasted with beautiful descriptions of nature, at odds with the horrors of human society. It will definitely be an interesting book to further dissect in English lessons
4.5/5⭐

dear lord i'm a bit sick of men taking advantage of poor young girl stories atm, will come back to this later
This may be the worst book I've ever had the misfortune of reading. I find Tess incredibly unlikeable, to the point where there were times I had to put the book down because of how idiotic she was. I would rather never read another book for the rest of my life than reread Tess.

Read this for my Hardy and Protomodernism class. It was wonderful, of course though I find myself a bit surprised this is his most famous novel. I feel like the characters here are less vividly drawn and lack some complexity compared to characters in his other novels like The Mayor of Casterbridge and The Woodlanders.
