I really don't think this book was bad at all, I thought it was pretty good. I feel like the fact that there are just... other books I'd much rather be reading at the moment really just put me off it
Probably my main annoyance about it is that I thought the narrative was way too light on Angel. I did not like him for a second. Phase the third and fourth also both just felt ungodly slow to me and I did not enjoy that part of the book at all

Tried to get through this last year for a classics challenge, but then got busy. I would try again someday.

This book completely frustrated me in both a good and bad way - the feminist in me was reeling. It took me a long time to understand that Thomas Harry’s writing was coming from a place of support than the author believing what he was writing about the treatment and unfortunate fate of Tess. It was so stretched out narratively and the beautiful imagery descriptors started to wane and I felt it hard to distinguish the accent until a fair bit into the novel. Tess also frustrated me endlessly, her intelligence was wasted on her. That being said, it’s a classic tragedy showing how women have always been failed by society and the justice systems that are meant to protect them. Have read it once and am glad of it but unlikely to revisit
