This seriously felt like a fever dream and I needed to pull myself back to reality after reading. Kafkaesk teenage fairytale set in an absurde lovecraftian New England university town.

I think I said "what the fuck" 100 times. It's a good book that leaves you in the dark a lot. The twist at the end I should have predicted but didn't.

I honestly have no idea what just happened in this book and I’m still unsure whether I liked it or not. The first half was very slow and a little confusing. It pick up after halfway but just got more confusing as I went on. The main character also had a very unreliable narration which made things even more puzzling. I think the concept is cool, but I wish there was a little more world-building to explain why and how some things happened. I didn’t enjoy the writing style either, and it took me a while to finish this because I just wasn’t that interested. Overall I don’t think I would recommend this book because it left me more confused in the end than anything else.

This was an interesting book and at first I was ready to give up and then it got really good. Then it kind of felt meh again, and then the ending went back to really good. I really liked the message and how thought provoking this book was. There are a lot of things left unanswered like certain symbols and meanings, but maybe I just didn’t catch onto them I don’t know.

Utterly thought provoking and wrapped in unique yet deliciously descriptive prose. Themes and intent of the book seemed to change on a dime somewhat to its detriment (maybe I just didn’t fully grasp it), but I’m not mad about, simply just sitting here wondering what it was possibly all about. Great as a potential “dark academia” staple, particularly as it contends with ideas of privilege, class, pretension, and the Academy as a navel-gazing voyeur of poverty and suffering, though there’s much more to the story than this.

I think the main reason I enjoyed (and devoured) this book so much is because so much is up for interpretation. And normally I hate that,  but it worked so well for me here. The rage and abandonment in a workshop. Feeling like an outsider. The representation of her voice, her art, and that the ideas themselves are her soulmate. The fucking possibility that
Samantha is  schizophrenic or some other type of mentally ill that leads her to make up all the magic. The idea that writing or art instead is magic/magical.

There is beautiful language in this book! And the story was captivating. Over all I just felt there could have been more exploration into the more fantastical side of the books world

My first thought after reading this book was "...what just happened??". After processing it a bit more and seeing others' perspectives (which felt in line with how I was perceiving it) I realized that this book has a ton of nuance and I think some people may have missed that, which may lead to lower ratings and dislike of the story. Overall, a really good book and something I might re-read in the future to see how it all plays out, already knowing the story.
