DID NOT FINISH

Storia piatta…non riesco a finirlo. La trama pareva avvicente
reflective slow-paced

I mean I liked it, but not that much.
It's just a classic that is trying very hard to be profound, but not one of my favourites.

Tl;dr I needed a shower right after finishing this book.

Oh man, Emma, I am so frustrated and so in love with your character. First of all, let’s get this out of the way, the language, the prose, the words of this book are simply amazing. Like, who knew it was possible to describe candle wax melting and making it sound like the most important thing you had read in your life? Every chapter, page, paragraph, every moment was filled with incredible metaphors that illuminate both your mind and your mind’s eye: you can see, hear, feel, smell, taste everything Flaubert sees.

The characters of this book... Well, it seems every individual is a caricature, everyone is just pushed up to 11 at all moments. Emma is grotesque and frustrating, Charles is naive and frustrating, Homais is so full of himself and frustrating, everyone is just so frustrating in the best of ways! There were so many moments of this book where I had no choice but to react outloud, whether it be a small gasp or an actual facepalm. Who knew it was possible to absolutely muck up every major decision in your life!? This book is not a balm for anxiety or embarrassment, Flaubert is happy to make us the reader feel uncomfortable the entire ride, knowing we cannot get off.

Why is Emma so frustrating as a main character? Because I see parts of myself in Emma. I see past actions and decisions I have made in the decisions Emma makes. Emma is a combination of all the worst habits of humans and we can’t help but both love and hate her because Emma is US, the reader.

I really loved this book; it moved me, it made me laugh out loud so many times, and the writing is just so beautiful. However, it is a mean and agonizing book, and I do not want to read it again for a while, it just made me so uncomfortable. Good job, Gustave!

3.5

I really enjoyed this. Emma Bovary is a fantastically nuanced character. I got a real feel for rural french society of the time. I love the way so many people are partly to blame for her fate, and yet there is no out-and-out villain, certainly not Emma herself.

This is one of those Classics which everyone says you ought to read. I held out for a long time expecting it to be boring. It really isn't. I'm glad I've got this one under my belt. It was great to read.
