DID NOT FINISH: 40%

DNF 40%. I do not know why I don't care for Brene Brown. I'm sure Brene Brown could tell me why I do not care for Brene Brown and analyze it for me haha. I was reading this in print but the textbook size and feel of this book just wasn't doing it for me and it was hard to read with a kitten in my lap lol. Then I switched to audio and her reading it just felt too cloying for me. I've gotten really picky with my "self-help" books though. Apparently I read one of her other books in 2019 and rated it 4 stars but I kind of remember trudging through it so I do not know why I rated it so highly.

Brown’s writing is brilliant, as per usual. I appreciated her conversational style (especially apparently in the audiobook, which I listened to and recommend) as well as her willingness to dive into hard topics, leaving plenty of room for personal exploration. Without being too heavy handed or preachy, Brown strikes an excellent balance.

I’ve had a physical copy of this book on my shelf for ages, but hadn’t had the willpower to read it. But this audio book is really engaging, and I found it fun to flip through the physical book with the audio playing to look at what Brown was describing. She’s a really great narrator, you can tell she’s passionate about her work and it in turn makes you excited to listen to it. You even get some fun tidbits from her that aren’t actually in the book!

Beyond that, this is a great reference guide to the range of human emotions and experiences. I don’t know if I’d read the whole thing straight through again, but I could easily see myself flipping to certain chapters to remind myself of what I read and relate it to my life.

Brene Brown is like my guru! I love her and I love that this book focused on emotions. I didn’t realize how many emotions there are. And I definitely didn’t have a definition of each one.

I think what I took away from this book was (paraphrasing) when we can accurately understand and name our emotions it opens us up to between understanding of ourselves and better communication with others. It gives us a sense of freedom bc he know how we really feel and can label it and then trying express it to others with the hope that we will be understood.

I think my favorite quote for this book is: “I’m not here to be right, I’m here to get it right.”

DNF. This isn’t like her other books and reads like a dictionary. I found it boring and didn’t get much out of it.
