The book gets off to a chilling start and Koontz does an excellent job of creating the setting for impending doom. By the middle and ending of the book, however, I am disturbed by several situations that just don't pan out quite right and the characters seem not fully fleshed out. The evil is unleashed when a behavior modification program via subliminal perception is being used by disturbed men who plan to take over the world. Even scarier, is the fact that the technology exists to perform this 'imaginative' feat. Koontz references this in the introduction. This is one of his earlier works, perhaps he just hadn't quite found his groove yet because the flaws I found in this book are definitely not evident in his latest works. But still, worth the read if you are a true Koontz fan...otherwise, you're not really missing anything if you pass. He has much better books out that use the same premise (behavior modification, mind control).
4.5 stars.
Trigger warning: Rape and violence in the book.
Very cleverly written, especially the explanation of Subliminal programming and how it affects people with their subconscious minds and how it controls them. Read every last word of the whole chapter that was between Salsbury and Dawson. It will open your mind.

This was a really interesting concept, and an amazingly written plot. I really enjoyed the characters (mostly) and if the lock and key theory was real and could be used on me, I’d forget this book and read it all over again..
The people in the town of Black River, ever since the sighting of two men in the mill’s water supply, have been acting increasingly odd, with no straight forward reason why. Glenn drove straight into a wall at 100mph, Alice stuck herself to a wooden board by driving a fork through her hand etc.
Paul Annendale and his children Mark and Rya visit every year, and after the family comes to face to face with the chief of police’s inexplicable actions, they are determined to get to the bottom of this. Why is this happening? Who were the men in the mill, and why, days before did the entire town come down with a case of Night Chills..

I love the science and psychology aspect of this read. This book was hard to put down for me. It was creepy and thrilling!
If you're not an avid horror/thriller fan this will be hard for you to get into, but once you do it doesn't slow down. This centered around mind control, subliminals, and a couple of lunatics who wanted to take over the world. It was original, very creepy, and overall a good read.
