I really liked her first novel, so I went into this hoping for good things.

I think the writing style has greatly improved, but to be honest, I didn't care one bit for the main character or for the main storyline. I wanted to know more about her family history and the story of Rose was just fascinating.

A HUGE disappointment after MKD. I couldn't even finish it, SO boring!

I really enjoyed Kim Edwards' style of writing in this novel- much more than in "The Memory Keeper's Daughter". This is an interesting and layered story that kept me interested and engaged through the entire novel. I did feel that she wrapped everything up a bit too neatly at the end.

Oh I enjoyed this. Read it in one day in a cabin in the woods and was totally captivated. Along with the pleasure of reading about someone else's family secrets, mysteries and betrayals, the additional themes of women's suffrage at the turn of the twentieth century and unrecognized women's stories in the bible were totally unexpected.

What I liked:
1) I liked Rose's story and wanted more of that
2) I liked the theme of the book: Don't live in the past, live in the present
3) The writing is very lyrical

What I didn't like:
1) The book has cheating in it but, Lucy doesn't get punished for it.
2) I wanted this book to have 2 perspectives, Lucy is the only one that tells the story.

I have not read the authors other book and I dont think I will. I really could never get the book moving. It took me almost 4 days to read this because it was so slow.

the main character was pretty un-likable, which made this a little hard to read. liked book #1 much better.
reflective slow-paced
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No

I enjoyed this book much more than her Memory Keeper's Daughter book.

This book didn't really do it for me. I didn't connect with any of the characters- and the plot seemed very contrived. The historical information throughout was not in-depth enough to actually be informative, but it took up a huge portion of the book. It seemed fairly disjointed, and I found myself just waiting to be done. I felt like I was being lectured as well. Also as a sidenote: I found the main character to be confusing. She gets caught up in this quest to research her family's past and becomes EXTREMELY involved...because it's "family"...but at the same time, she basically spends the whole book ignoring her teenage cousin who is desperately trying to forge a relationship with her.
