Some stories begin as beautifully written, but then slowly wear you out with a nagging dislike of a character. Lucy is searching for something the entire story, and trying to parallel her own wanderings with a long lost relative. That is not what bothers me about her, it's the disreguard of others feeling. Lucy is dealing with grief and can't escape her past and all the what ifs. The moral of the story is a good one once you endure Lucy's moods...don't dwell on the past or you miss out on what is in the here and now and destroy what future you may have had.
The author has one of the characters in this book reading her previous book. Lame.
Loved the story. It is beautifully written in a calming, lyrical way, and the characters (though perhaps a bit generic) are all interesting and relatable. The plot made me think about how little we know about our ancestors' pasts, and how easily we assume that their lives were the simple little stories that we heard growing up. Appreciated the inner struggle of Lucy--it felt applicable to me in my stage of life. Finally, it made me happy that most of the plot was set in Western New York. It was good to think about all the stories that are right around home.

Meine Güte, hat das sich jetzt gezogen am Ende! Ich fand den Klappentext ja sehr nett, vielleicht nicht vielversprechend, aber immerhin klang das Buch wie ein guter Zeitvertreib. Es beginnt aber schon sehr früh damit, Dinge wahnsinnig ausführlich zu beschreiben, die dem Erzählstrang nicht im geringsten weiterhelfen und damit etwas nutzlos wirken - wie diese Gapfiller Episoden in Serien, wenn man ein bisschen Pause machen will. Aber doch nicht alle paar Seiten. Auch die Hauptfigur fand ich sehr anstrengend und wenig nachvollziehbar. Lucy wirkt einfach nicht auf mich. Wenn es dann ab der Mitte des Buches dann mehr ans Eingemachte geht (sprich, es gibt neue Erkenntnisse zu dieser verschwiegenen Familiengeschichte), wird es auch zwischenzeitlich spannend und die Seiten lassen sich schneller weglesen. Trotzdem wirkt die ganze Geschichte ein wenig an den Haaren herbeigezogen. Was mich auch wahnsinnig gestört hat, war die Inkonsistenz bei Daten und Altersangaben, die teilweise im Text anders waren oder zumindest hinten mit dem Stammbaum hinten und vorne nicht zusammengepasst haben. Da windet sich mein Historikerherz. Außerdem wirft die Hauptfigur manchmal mit Erkenntnissen um sich, von denen man nicht weiß, woher sie plötzlich kommen.

A very slow read and the plot wasn't that interesting until the end. The story could have focused more on what happened with Art and the ex-boyfriend.
I liked this more than I thought I would. Especially the "women's hidden history" element.
Hmmm. I have mixed feelings about this book. Focused on a 29yr old American woman who returns home after years of living in asia. Back home on the Lake of Dreams she is haunted by stories of a mysterious great aunt who was shunned by the family. The lead deals with her own angst over her fathers death and the tale of what happened to her aunt. I found the voice to be somewhat slow and plodding. At times she also just felt like a narcissistic whiner and yet I still read it. Hmmmm.
This was a pretty good read. A nicely written family drama/mystery. The one thing that I didn't buy was Lucy's so called drive/compulsion/etc. to find out the details of her mysterious ancestor Rose. Everything else was fine and worked, but not Lucy's motivation that drives the entire book. In the end, it was a small point, but enough to warrant a lower rating.
