Took me out of a reading slump. I liked it a lot, though I wished I could have seen
more of their relationship after they reconnected
, but it was vert heart-warming.

This book … I took my time with it, I’m glad I did, it had me sobbing throughout almost every chapter. This is my first Kacen Callendar book and I will be reading their other books now. Major and multiple trigger warnings so please check before reading. This is going down as one of my favourite books, some really important messages in this story. So much care went into telling Matt and Logan’s story 💜

I thought this was going to be a very different review until about 20% of this books, I liked it but I wasn’t sucked in. The writing was a little more show than tell which I think can happen easily in first person narrative. But then I got SUCKED in. This book is raw and painful and you grow to love these characters. It tackles such hard topics like childhood SA with care and a strong thread of reality. These characters are messy and make the wrong choices even if it’s for the right reasons. I don’t know much about Hollywood but these characters felt like real people to me. The frank discussions of racism, colorism and homophobia felt so real and raw. The excerpts of Ao3 brought some much needed levity and had me chuckling. I loved the bits of twitter or news and YouTubers all weighing in on this relationship between Logan and Mattie. I’m about to go devour the rest of KC’s novels and hope we get another adult romance soon.

The first half of this is really slow but it does build the characters effectively! I liked the discussion about healing from trauma and setting healthy boundaries. I don't love romance myself, but I'll read anything Kacen Callender writes.

Oh I love love loved this. I binged it in one day. I’ve liked and appreciated Kacen Callendar’s YA books but this one was next level. The characters are not just reduced to tropes, no one magically  fixes another person, and like one character says, there’s no forced happily ever after that feels fake (if temporarily satisfying) in a lighter, more traditional romance. Huge trigger warnings for sure and this will not be for everyone. I cried through the last quarter of the book.
