A pulse-pounding novel is thrilling, horrific, and thought provoking. A rallying cry to the disparity in attention to cases of missing Black women and girls. All wrapped in a single novel brimming with Appalachian Gothic and mysterious dark woods.

small town murder meets supernatural/mythology ending?? was a bit of a slow start but then  picked up & was shaping up to be a really interesting commentary on blackness, its present & historical context, & its effects on generations & also had some pretty good plot twists. however, the last 15%ish of the book threw that all out the window in favor of (in my opinion) a disappointing, strange, weirdly-written ending that tied in kind of an unrelated mythology??? so confusing, especially because
it was a point made in the book that egypt was NOT in the area of africa that their ancestors were from? like if youre going the mythology/supernatural route, AT LEAST pick from an actually relevant culture.
like bffr, of all endings 😭

i also wasn’t the biggest fan of the writing itself - was a little too casual, choppy, & “telling, not showing” for me

I don’t read thrillers often but I read this for the Haitian Readathon and absolutely loved it! The way the story came together was masterful and I like how every character felt like their own actual person.

Hey Friends,
I wanted to like this book so bad... I finally decided to pick it up and I was disappointed. Before I get to why I was disappointed, let's talk about what I enjoyed. I listed to the audiobook for this story and the narration was incredible. The writing style is alluring. It's poetic without loosing you. The way the author paints a picture in this story is sublime. The first half of this story sucked me in. I got so much laundry done while listening to the first half! I'm not sure what happened but the story began to take a turn and while it should've been very suspenseful, I was bored. The twists lacked interest and the storyline just became silly. I think there was an attempt to give the events more than one meaning but it all fell flat for me. There is so many interesting elements and layers to how this tale is told so it gives the impression that you are building towards something grand and it falters. I would totally give this author another try but this book will be a one time experience for me.
Happy Reading!
