Just really boring. It's like someone read The City and the City and thought to themselves, wouldn't it be cooler if we knew for sure that the cities were in different planes of existence, and also i threw in a ton of """gritty""" fantasy cliches for no reason? Pass.

I was invested in the story, but less invested in the characters. There were elements/traits of each character that I enjoyed, but they read more like symbols than individuals.

That gave me enough emotional distance that when darker themes prevailed in the last third of the book I was very interested in finding out what happened, but not hung up on any one character's fate.

This might sound like a critique, but it was actually enjoyable, because I tend to be a very emotional reader and it's nice to have a little distance and just enjoy the story.

I was very whelmed. This is like the fantasy book equivalent of eating at Chili's. It was fine.
