adding to my favorites of this year! so moving and absolutely drew me in.

3.5-3.75 stars. Not my favourite thing I’ve ever read but I still enjoyed it and I’m glad to have finally have read it after it being on my list for years. I enjoyed the depictions of different ways and customs in the ancient world.

So beautiful and lush, the writing is so vivid it paints an amazingly delicate and compelling and tactile scene of day to day life in a time/place so distant from now. The characters of Dinah's family feel so real, so relatable while living in a completely different world. Only not a 5 star because the last quarter of the book wasn't as magical as the first part. But truly a special piece of historical fiction.

SO good -- thank you for the rec, Jamie! I brought this with me to a family reunion and at least three other women told me, "I LOVE that book." The story was amazing on its own, but made even better by giving me the adult (and fictional) version of what I learned in Sunday School. It made me realize again how women's stories in The Bible are minimized or abbreviated when they're not completely erased.

This was beautiful and emotional. I know it's a novel and only loosely based on the Genesis narrative, but there were still more liberties taken than I think were necessary. I definitely appreciated a woman's take on the complexity of Jacob's family dynamic and I will take that part of the book with me.

I loved this! It was one of those that I didn't want to put down. I loved the stories, both the tragic and the happy ones. I felt really connected to Dinah, cheering for her and grieving for her along the way.
