Typically I would not read a book like this, I read it for book club and I have to say I didn't like it. The writing voice was strange and not in a style that I liked.

I actually could not put this down it was SO engrossing. Dinah is such a beautiful character and all of the relationships we see throughout this book (the good, the bad, and the ugly) are so well written. I cried about a million times over the ideas of mothers and daughters and women. Mandatory reading fr

One of the reviews on the back of the books says, "The Red Tent is what the Bible would be like if it had been written by women.." and I could not agree more with that statement. This tells the story of a character in the Bible that was simply glossed over. Dinah's story brought me great joy and great grief. There was redemption, second chances, and so much sisterhood. This is now my favorite book.

I had high hopes for this book; however, I was extremely disappointed. Since I'm very familiar with the Bible, I think my main reason for disliking this book is that it strayed so far from the Biblical depiction of the characters that I found the book irritating rather than engaging.

For example, the novel depicts Rebekah as cold, demanding, and ungrateful. However, the Bible depicts her as someone who was hardworking, kind, and hospitable (e.g., when she meets Abraham's servant at the well, prior to knowing who he was, she offers him a drink and offers to draw water for his camels until they are done drinking).

Overall, the extreme diversion from the biblical story seemed unnecessary, and at times, slightly blasphemous in its adoration and veneration of polytheism.
