I thought this book was great except for the portrayal of Joseph. That was a huge mistake.
Beautifully written, she uses language in a poetic way, almost like reading song lyrics. I loved this book for its exploration into female relationships, for reading of how women used to be a tribe, truly treating each other as sisters, and yes a lot of fighting and dysfunction, but still a support system which so many of us do not have now. I was impressed with how closely we used to live with nature, to the earth, to the goddesses, to the seasons and it makes me long for it in some ways. The descriptions of life for women when owned by men as property was brutal and painful to read. However, I think it's important to learn of our history as women and of course, it hasn't completely been erased, those attitudes and entitlements still carry on in some men (and women).
Overall, gorgeously and lushly written and educational in that time and culture in history. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because after Dinah moves to Egypt, there is a long section that didn't appeal to me. She was essentially a doormat and that annoyed and bored me. Fortunately, it did pick up and she found herself again and the incredibly moving spiritual and mystical last few chapters made me truly love this book.

Several people have recommended I read this book over the years, and I am very glad I finally took their advice.
What can i say, I really enjoyed this book. The language, the ease of reading, everything. I know a lot of people are screaming 'blasphemy' but I liked the parts where many would say that. These were real people with real emotions with real morals. We often think that people of the Bible are faultless but they aren't. This book makes the figures of the bible human. And that I think is really important. I have been a Christian, I learned the stories. This book wouldn't change my thoughts of the stories but it does make me wonder more about people in the Bible that weren't fully described. What were they like? How did they live?
This book gives one explanation of one woman and how she lived. I love it.

A vibrant story that puts you right in the heart of The Red Tent among the camaraderie of the females…yet with so many historical liberties taken, I’m left confused. Could’ve been great, but I’ll settle on pretty good.
