4.5 stars. What a beautiful depiction of old world motherhood and womanhood. As a woman who does not want children, I’ve never seen the beauty of motherhood expressed quite so clearly or so empathetically. Heart wrenching.

A great novel about women. Sisterhood, motherhood, etc. Loyalty and female relationships permeate the story.

All I knew about this book when I first read it was the author, a local Boston writer who was a client of a travel agent I worked for. Suddenly Anita was flying around the world lecturing about a book she'd written that - via word of mouth alone - eventually made it to the NY Times best seller list.. Anyway, as the local buzz started I got it and read it. I started on a Saturday, and didn't leave my bed until I was done on Sunday.

I have been known to say this is the best book I've ever read, which is to say it was most appreciated and loved by me (since we could all argue over what makes a 'best book in the world' - isn't is mostly about how it hits an individual?) I've read it twice now, and still say it's in my top three.
