This book was a beautiful read, the use of language and dialect puts you right alongside the characters and forms a gorgeous imagery of the setting. It’s a sad novel and full of hardships faced while growing up, but it covers all the topics so beautifully.

Heartbreaking story exploring sectarianism in the West of Scotland, with a LGBT love story intertwined in the mix. Tackles difficult themes and won’t be for everyone but thoroughly enjoyed, manages to be very humorous on top of the darkness which is a much needed tonic in some chapters

somehow both devastating and hopeful. for a relatively simple plot, it often becomes sprawling and much more expansive than the small Scottish town setting, which isn’t a bad thing. all the characters feel realised and individual. it’s nothing new, but I love how the accents are written into the text, just adds a whole new layer to the world
