I felt seen listening to this book. Really cracks your heart open and felt nostalgic in some ways.

Incredible. I was speechless time and again as Acevedo's Xiomara struggled to establish her own identity through her words as she tried to juggle the expectations of her mother, her Twin, her best friend, her teachers, her crush, and society at large. This verse novel addresses so many important issues, and handles them all beautifully.

Perfection

One of the most creatively inspiring and beautifully written pieces of writing I’ve ever been lucky enough to read. Quick and beautiful.

I liked this a lot better than I thought I would? Poetry is so hit-miss with me to begin with, but I'm also such an unbearable contrarian about it. It seems like the more popular a book of poetry is, the less I like it. And "The Poet X" is VERY popular, so I as certainly wary. But it was actually pretty readable. The poetic forms left something to be desired, but then again it's a, supposed to be slam and b, supposed to be written by a high schooler, so there's a lot of room for forgiveness. But it told a story from an interesting perspective that I don't read enough of, and told it well, so this went over just fine with me.

3.5/5 stars

A new addition to my favourite books.
A totally visceral story, told in a beautiful and original way. A story full of representation, culture and strength.
I loved it all, from beginning to end, and Xiomara, our protagonist, really inspired me and made me fall in love with her. A girl with enormous strength, very "brava", who has taught me the importance of fighting for your dreams and not giving up no matter how difficult the road may be.
A book that has made me laugh and cry and that has trapped me so much that I have not been able to put it down until I have finished it.
Totally recommended. 10/10
