Poet X

Elizabeth Acevedo

4.45 AVERAGE

I've only read one other book by this author, but so far I think she excels at unique novel structures as well as character work. This was going to be another 5 star read for me until the conclusion. It felt rushed and
the reconciliation  between the protagonist and her mother didn't feel deserved. When the abuse is fueled by religion, it feels wrong to have their priest be the only mediator. X's safety just doesn't seem prioritized by the people around her over preserving her relationship with her mother.

a book about spoken word poetry, written in poems and prose, is definitely meant to be read via audio! especially if the poet themself narrates the book

this was an emotional account of 6 months in the life of Xiomara and her daily musings of what it’s like to be a teen in Harlem. she struggles to balance her mother’s religiously motivated expectations, growing into her body, feelings for a boy at school, and her burgeoning passion for writing poetry.

loved this quick, unique, and beautifully written story that packs a punch!

Shit, now I'm crying

I have always been a huge HUGE fan of Slam Poetry and even write some myself. I’ve been to performances and leave with goose bumps, in complete awe of the art. When I picked up this book, I was expecting poetry but NOT a story, not such an amazing tone. I’m blown away and this book will be read again and again. There’s some stories that leave imprints on your heart and this is one of them. Xiomara is an amazing, talented and strong young women and I admire her so much! 5 stars through and through.
