Ok writing, nothing special. Rather bland, honestly. And the constant plot holes was pretty annoying.
Why aren’t they carrying the kits? They’re WALKING THEM all the way? Seriously?

I feel that this series is starting to become a bit formulaic at this point - although I want to know more about the characters and the world - the mystery aspects hold me less.

I'm clearly not reading these in the right order but it doesn't necessarily matter. I love LMB's storytelling, worldbuilding, and the clarity of her characters. This is something of a whodunnit, but one with a lot of interesting detail and discoveries

This story is readable as usual, and I enjoy it, although it seems one of the less important Penric stories, not contributing any plot developments to the series as a whole. It consists of a relatively routine murder enquiry complicated mainly by the fact that the victim was a sorceress. Some new characters are introduced and start to become interesting, but unfortunately we never see them again.

As usual with these stories, some new aspects of demonology are explored.

It’s a direct sequel to [b:Penric and the Shaman|30365013|Penric and the Shaman (Penric and Desdemona, #2)|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1466762873l/30365013._SX50_.jpg|50875790], giving another appearance to Oswyl and Inglis.
