Thank you to NetGalley for the advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was another fantastic entry in this trilogy. It was great to see the ramifications of the ending of the first book. I really enjoyed watching the characters grow as they came to understand what was happening. The central theme of family dynamics was executed just as well as it was in book one. I found the romance to be the least compelling aspect, but it is not the main focus of this trilogy so it did not bother me too much. I LOVE this series and I can't wait to see how the final book wraps things up.

An enjoyable sequel! The magic system is probably my favorite part of the book, but I also enjoy the way the different characters interact with each other and scheme behind each other's backs.

Ouff, the mommy issues are strong in this one!
"You're more alike than I think you want to admit," he says finally.
"But if your mother were in your position," Pasquale says, "If she could save a stranger at the risk of hurting herself? When there is nothing for her but lingering pain and another step toward death? ...I don't believe she would consider that for a moment. You aren't like her in the ways that matter."
I was so excited for this installment but I kept pushing it off for too long. Upon returning, I was immediately reminded of the reason why. Every mention of Sophronia felt like a stab at an open wound, but at least, I'm glad no one else (that matters) died.
This was a fun quick read, I could not put it down, even when the clock struck 4 am and my eyes started watering. The first book remains near and dear to my heart, but this one was just as action-packed and enjoyable. Never a dull moment with Laura Sebastian ❤️!

I've recently found that if I fall in love with the characters, a book could basically be terrible and I'll still rate it higher. I read Castles In Their Bones twice, so when I got to this I'd become attached to the triplets, and wanted to see where they would go after the shocking events at the end of the first book.
While Beatriz travels to Bessemia, Daphne stays in Friv, and this story focuses more of them coming to terms with losing Sophie and preparing for what will happen next, so this story doesn't move forward much at all, for such a big book.
This is pure filler, with a few small events changing the course of the story, but I do wonder if this would have worked better as a duology. However, I appreciated the time spent with Daphne, Beatriz and new POV Violie, and I'm interested to see what will happen in the third book.
