You’re invited to walk along Dietmar and his companions as they find themselves strangers in a strange land. Everyone that you meet feels distinct and well-developed. I’m sure that everyone has an extensive backstory that they only provided us with hints about. Secrets abound and the more they let them slip, the more you’re drawn into the world.

Throughout the story, you’ll travel to a multitude of locales. Each location is well-described and easy to imagine. Every place also feels different from the last without being so alien that it removes you from the story. Despite traveling to so many places, nowhere overstays its welcome and the story still feels fast-paced.

There is tension when the characters encounter an enemy and need to engage in combat. The narrative weaves a delicate dance of grit and beauty as they swing their weapons and fight for survival.

It is apparent the author has done their due diligence in researching everything. Throughout the novel, you will discover a plethora of new terms, including historical references and unfamiliar words. It can take you out of the moment to look up a word every few sentences if you’re like me and can’t retain the definition after the first time. However, I learned a lot of new things and I can’t fault the author for increasing my vocabulary. Just be sure to have a dictionary or device on hand to look up words that you can’t figure out through context.

In summation, this is an excellent novel. Once you finish the book, you’ll realize that you didn’t just read a novel, but bore witness to the story as a member of the party.

The story was very good. There are times throughout the book where the descriptions were too much and I got a bit lost at times. Over all, the journey was worth it though.

Atmospheric. Upsetting. Enjoyable. More dad-focused than I expected. Not very christian for a pilgrimage book (/pos)

I should have paid attention to the word "horror" in the subtitle - I liked the historical fiction for the first hundred pages then it went suddenly deep into the horror and it turned out I wasn't in the mood.  I'd like to know what happened to the protagonists, maybe some other day.
