This wasn’t my favorite. It’s a parody of The Phantom of the Opera, which I quite liked as a kid. The fat “jokes” were questionable at best and got tired quickly. Otherwise, I giggled plenty of times of Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax are always fun to visit.
This is the 18th Discworld novel and the 5th outing for the witches.
Some mothers do have ‘em and so it appears do some opera houses – phantoms that is.
Ankh-Morpork’s opera house also has some other visitors in this fabulous comedy. Firstly there is Agnes Nitt, who would very much like to be an opera singer called Perdita X. There is Christine, who has star quality but no talent at all, not that this is an impediment. We have our favourite interfering old witches who are on a mission to recruit Agnes as their third and also to get their dues from a publisher who is selling Nanny Oggs’ “Joye of Snackes”. We meet Enrico Basilica formerly known as Henry Slugg, who is sick of pasta and is craving real Ankh-Morporkian food. Also Death makes the obligatory appearance, when he meets his match in Granny Weatherwax. And not forgetting the ubiquitous Walter Plinge.
This is definitely one of my favourite Discworld books, the sheer joy of parody at its best. It’s a rip-roaring adventure that isn't over until the fat lady sings, and even then....

I loved this book: #18 in the DiscWorld series and #5 in the Witches subcategory. If you haven't read Terry Pratchett, go out and get one today. There will be no more books written so you can read all the books. I have read this one before, this time I listened to the cds in the car. It makes fun of opera and Phantom of the Opera in particular.

Can't say no to a good murder mystery, especially set in a relatively familiar environment and written by such a fantastic and goofy author.
The witches are making things right (by no means could this be construed for meddling) on the Discworld again, but since Magrat is off queen-ing, they're feeling a bit short-handed. A promising candidate for the roll, Agnes Nitt, seems to have gone off to Ank-Morpork to let her alter-ego, "Perdita," shine at the one place that an over weight woman with nice hair, a great personality, and the vocal range of a T-Rex/vampire bat chimera could hope to find acceptance, or even fame: The Opera.
But people are turning up murdered, and some say they've seen a ghost in a white mask... And so, it's time for the witches to mingle with thespians again in Maskerade!
