Can't say no to a good murder mystery, especially set in a relatively familiar environment and written by such a fantastic and goofy author.
The witches are making things right (by no means could this be construed for meddling) on the Discworld again, but since Magrat is off queen-ing, they're feeling a bit short-handed. A promising candidate for the roll, Agnes Nitt, seems to have gone off to Ank-Morpork to let her alter-ego, "Perdita," shine at the one place that an over weight woman with nice hair, a great personality, and the vocal range of a T-Rex/vampire bat chimera could hope to find acceptance, or even fame: The Opera.
But people are turning up murdered, and some say they've seen a ghost in a white mask... And so, it's time for the witches to mingle with thespians again in Maskerade!

A delightful romp. The witches series continues to be one of my favorites in the discworld series.
Granny Weatherwax still can do no wrong with me. She and Death are great characters that make the Witch and Death parts of the Discworld series something a little better than standard genre fiction.
‘Well, basically there are two sorts of opera,’ said Nanny, who also had the true witch’s ability to be confidently expert on the basis of no experience whatsoever. ‘There’s your heavy opera, where basically people sing foreign and it goes like “Oh oh oh, I am dyin’, oh, I am dyin’, oh, oh, oh, that’s what I’m doin’”, and there’s your light opera, where they sing in foreign and it basically goes “Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! I like to drink lots of beer!”, although sometimes they drink champagne instead. That’s basically all of opera, reely.’Non esistono libri che devi leggere.
Per citare Raoul: "We have all been blind and yet the answer is staring us in the face". E la risposta è: Andrea, per te Discworld finisce qui.

I enjoyed the links to the Phantom of the Opera but there was a lot of fatphobia and ableism in this book. Which seems very unlike Terry!
Graphic: Ableism, Fatphobia
not one of my favourite Discworld novels but still enjoyable

Dripping with Pratchett's dry humor and 90s pop culture references. A delight.
