Enjoyable, a good read during Christmas. My only problem is that I am not a fan of Alvirah. To me she is a nosy neighbor that thinks that she has a right to get into other people's business, and to top it off she thinks that she is smart and quick thinking but really she just gets lucky with things happening to her.

This harmless but unambitious book was a quick read, despite not being a novella. That's it from me, that's my review... but if I want to point out something it's that this is part of a series, and I read the 3rd book unknowlingly.

The similarities between Mary Higgins Clark and her daughter Carol are quite evident. Mary developed her trademark style over the years, while Carol took some kind of seminar from her mother. Carol has more humor to her books, as a kind of dry, deadpan style.

Mary has her dark books and her light books, and I've enjoyed both types. This one was such an enjoyable read, that for once I cannot take the pulse of the book and tell you what makes it tick. I think it deserves more than the average 3.70 points that is attached to the book. Now I'm reading book 2 and it's even better, yet lower in the ratings, with 3.66 points.

Short & sweet review: Full disclosure, this book has a “from the library of [my grandma]” sticker on the inside. Serial mysteries are not my usual genre, but this is a short and sweet holiday read. I really enjoyed both the writing and the pacing, and would recommend it to fans of the genre!

A engrossing novel of suspense involving a scared teen mother, an abandoned baby, a robbery, and a forged will.

When the book begins, Sondra, an eighteen year old woman leaves her baby girl on the doorstep of a church rectory inside a paper bag along with a stroller. Unbeknownst to her, Lenny, a robber is hiding in the church to steal a revered chalice from the church. Lenny successfully steals the chalice and then grabs the stroller and paper bag to throw off suspicion. Lenny is completely surprised when he arrives home to his aunt’s apartment and discovers the baby girl inside the paper bag. Lenny quickly comes up with a story of the baby’s origin which allow him to remain living with his aunt as well as give the baby (which he names Star or Stellina) a family.

Meanwhile at the local church, the local kids space is in danger of being shut down due to the age of the building. One of the church’s members Bessie has recently passed away and left her sister Kate the building so it can be repurposed as the kids center. Everything is going well until the two existing tenants the Bakers claim that Bessie left the building to them in her will. Kate is distraught over the situation and this is about the time when Alvirah decides to lean her detective skills to get to the bottom of the forged will.

Although I don’t regularly read books by this author, this was a surprisingly quick read. Higgins Clark creates characters that the reader cares about and a develops a storyline that makes you feel invested in the story and makes you want to stick with it until the book ends.
