The tension in this book is fantastic. The detailed yet elusive setting the characters where placed in, drew you into their world and I loved it!

This took me way too long to finish and that says a lot for me

A Dark Academia novel that focuses more on the inner turmoil of its main characters. The lives of Léo and Claire are inextricably connected to Montverre, the academy devoted to the study of the grand jeu, and to each other even though neither of them realise it yet.

This was a slow burn of a novel. The slow pace combined with my lack of time to read it faster made it feel like it took too long to finish. That being said I enjoyed the themes of loyalty, morality, art and, of course, betrayal. The relationships were meaty and had depth. While some might enjoy the elusive and mysterious nature of the grand jeu, the art form they study in the novel, I found it sort of irritating. It made it hard for me to visualise what they were doing and understand the connection characters had to it.

Crazy that I started reading this the very night I watched Yentl for the first time.

Very similar to Babel by R. F. Kuang with more focus on the romance and less focus on the world building. Usually I want a rich world but Collins writes relationships so grippingly I didn’t mind the blurryness outside of the intimacy. The way she writes specific human physical gestures and habits makes it so much more vivid. The diary sections were fanstasic, the twist made me gasp. The ending wasn’t as satisfactory as it could be — which was my main complaint for The Binding as well — but it definitely could be worse and doesn’t ruin the book for me. Most of all, this book made me feel

I wanted to love this book but I just couldn't as to me it felt like a lot of half done ideas drawn together. The world building was very sparse so it was difficult to immerse myself in the world. The characters were just meh and so I didn't care for any of them. The whole story centres around a game which is never explained and so the descriptions of what is happening were hard to follow and a bit dull. I did love the writing style and the different perspectives and that drove me to finish but I did skim a lot of the book.
