This was a cute read. There's a lot going on here. There's adventure, fantasy, pirates, romance, and magic. I had a lot of fun reading this. The only thing I struggled with was the lack of communication that happened between Tal and Athlen. Yes, this is YA, but in that aspect, it felt younger and more immature than it should have been. That being said, this is still a very enjoyable read. I found the universe this story is set in to be rather interesting and would have liked to see more. Also, Tal and Athlen are just adorable together. I also loved seeing how accepting of queer people they are in this world. It's nice not to experience a bunch of angst around that in a story. It's not even really a discussion. It just happens, and that's fine as it should be. All in all, this is a good and entertaining read that is worth a read.

This book made me a reviewer.
I’ve never written a book review before: usually I don’t have strong, clear opinions. This book, however, had me commenting on the useless exposition from about page 5.
It’s cute, don’t get me wrong. That’s what gave it those 2.5 stars. Other than that:
- The plot was eh. Boring, simple, repetitive information. Also, overly predictive.
- The characters were just. Contrived, they were contrived. They had little to no character development (or even personality in the beginning)
- The writing. Wasn’t so bad actually. It was light, easy, fun- at some times. It was just the dialogue and the exposition that just felt forced. I’ll give it this: there was a good semantic field for like 10 pages before a ‘big reveal’.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate the book. It was just a let down. I’d recommend this for someone who just wants a soft, fluffy, insta-love romance with a happy ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed this!! What a super cute YA fantasy m/m romance. I do wish it was like 50-100 pages longer though, some parts (especially the end) felt super rushed and there were some parts that could have gotten a little more attention.

Very much a YA book in its writing but very easy to enjoy. Fun characters, pretty good plot, and a pretty good fairy tale story. The characters kinda made the book for me, even the side character were pretty memorable, made the world feel lived in. My gripes would be the ending felt a bit rushed, I would have liked another chapter or two, and maybe the prose being a bit repetetive but other than a fun casual fantasy read. I found myself enjoying the first act and final act more than the middle, I think those parts had the more fairy tale aspect I was into, while the middle was different and more politics and conflict.
