The people rating this 3 stars or less just didn’t get it. If you’ve never struggled in life because of the essence of who you are, this isn’t the book for you.  This book made me feel seen, made me feel heard and made me pause and look deeper at how I let society hold me back. I found this to be an incredibly inspiring read with a fresh take. Seeing Elizabeth’s journey unfolding showcases so many truths about what it means to be a woman in society. The setting of the 1950 provides a clear and drastic portrayal of issues that are still faced today. I found myself falling in love with Elizabeth’s character and really rooting for her, even as I watched her hold on to a courage that I don’t think I could have had. The twist and turns keep it interesting, especially the parts about Calvin’s past. I particularly like the parts from the dogs perspectives which added freshness that broke up some of the heavier feelings. While a little predictable, I loved the ending.

I wanted to love this, but I just didn’t.

I thought it was a little boring, and I was not a fan of the main character. Or any of the characters for that matter, minus the dog. Always love the dog. The message of the story was lost due to not being able to take her, and many of the other characters, seriously. My biggest gripe was how the two scientist main characters were written. Smart people still have emotions and they’re not all awkward! There were some redeeming qualities of the story, and the importance of what the author is trying to say shouldn’t be lost.

This one didn’t grab me like I had hoped.

Changing this to a 5 star read - I know that if I hadn’t seen the show first, I would have rated this 5 stars initially. The more I think about it, the more it’s clear that this was a 5 star read.

Omg - updating this erased my previous review…wth

I can’t remember what I wrote but this is a fantastic story of a brilliant scientist overcoming the limits the society in the 60s put on women, along with personal trauma. The narration was brilliant and captured the essence of the fmc perfectly. This is a must read, in my opinion!
