I hate to rate an Ilona Andrews book so low, but it was bad, particularly as an audiobook.

Renée read this so melodramatically that I couldn't stand the climactic scenes. She doesn't have the range necessary to pull off this many voices, and the overall experience was worse because of it.

The above coupled with overly dramatic written monologue and dialogue made this a trial to get through.

At several points I wondered how old Andrea was supposed to be. Some of her behavior is privileged teenage/early 20s shit, but she also murders people and had an extremely traumatic childhood.

I wonder how much of this issue is their agent/publisher pushing for drama and how much was Ilona Andrews.

I love all their series, and this felt like a pale reflection of their potential. I'm disappointed. Perhaps if it was a shorter procedural it would have prevented the repetitive whining from Andrea about:
1. Joining the pack
2. Being with Raphael
3. Being beast-kin
4. Childhood trauma

The same exact complaints repeated without progression demonstrated made it a slog to listen to.

All in all, I will never pick this up again unless there's a graphic audio, and I would hesitate even then.

Roman was the best part. I hope he gets his own story. The story dragged & I had to skim for the first time in this series.

Can't get enough of this world! There were parts that dragged and the ending felt abrupt, but all in all, I enjoyed the story and I adore these characters.

It's hard to believe that at this time last year, I had never read anything by Ilona Andrews. Fast forward to now, and I'm completely caught up on both series this husband and wife team are currently writing and am desperately ready for their next book.

I'd forgotten how much I love Kate Daniels' world until I started this book and immediately got swept away again. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about having Andrea as a narrator instead of Kate, but I ended up really enjoying it. I liked getting to find out more about Andrea's background and why she's so hesitant about joining a pack. Her interaction with Raphael is great, even though at times, I echoed her desire to punch him. I found myself eagerly looking forward to every scene they'd have together. My favorite part in regards to their relationship had to be when
SpoilerAndrea covers Raphael's home - even the plates - in bright purple shag carpet. What made the scene even more perfect was Kate & Curran trying to act nonchalant when Raphael came home. Priceless.

There's plenty of action to go along with romance in this book, and the main storyline did not disappoint at all. I really wanted to stay up late last night and finish it, but I figured my coworkers would appreciate it if I wasn't grumpy today from lack of sleep. I hope to see more from Andrea's point of view in the future, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next Kate Daniels' book!

I like the Kate Daniels series better, but this was a good story. The audio book does NOT come with the bonus novella. I ordered it from the library, I hope I can read it soon!

More like a 4.5, but I'll bump it up.

I liked it. I completely forgot about this book after I finished with the Kate Daniels book. I think I attempted to read it, couldn't because it's a spin-off, then had a friend tell me I should, forgot about it, and can't even remember what made me think to read it. Perhaps I was looking at a list and saw it, but, anyway, I have FINALLY read it and I liked it. You definitely wanted to smack them sometimes, but it worked. I liked learning more about Andrea and I liked how she had her own mystery to solve like Kate does. I like how she finally came to terms with her role in the Pack and who she was. I think it was a little too neat, but whatever. It mostly worked. The mystery was interesting and I liked seeing Ascanio and him trying to learn. Raphael was, well, Raphael. You couldn't expect much different from him, but I loved how he punked and then her revenge back on him. I also liked the novella at the end that explained what Kate had been doing during the storyline.

[4 Stars] The Kate Daniels books just continue to impress me! Though I didn't love Andrea as much as Kate, it was really great to get into her head, find out more of her backstory, and overall just deal with a different set of problems that don't really relate to Kate's problems. I also thought the mystery was incredibly intriguing. It was probably one of my favorites, and seeing Andrea's investigative process was awesome! That being said, some of the romance elements bogged down the story because they felt so similar to ones we have seen in the past in Kate's books. Also, there were so many parallels between other things that happened in previous books and Andrea's story that I sometimes felt like Andrea and Kate were too similar in this book. Overall though, this is a solid spin-off book. I personally think it is a MUST to read before book six! So much development with Andrea! Ahhhh!
