I wish Goodreads let us give half stars to books because this is a 2.5.
This wasn't a good reading experience at all, this was a chore, this was suffering and frustration while living inside the head of a person that was really childish, ungrateful, and arrogant. I know trauma can do a number on people but the journey is not consistent with the character itself from past books, all the prerogatives set in book one regarding pack and shifters are thrown out of the window because of the protagonist, so much so that she alludes to that fact herself but doesn't repent.
Andrea went from the best novella until now to my least favorite character in this universe, when she was one of my favorites.

The Ilona Andrews writing team has already proven that they can write a great story with characters other than Kate and Curran. Case in point - Dali (the weretiger) and Jim (Curran's head of security) from Magic Dreams. If you haven't checked out that novella, I highly recommend it!
Gunmetal Magic is really two stories in one. The first is the novel, Gunmetal Magic, focusing on Andrea and Raphael. The second is a much shorter Kate/Curran novella (and previously released free eBook), Magic Gifts.
We may not get much of Kate here, but Andrea's story more than makes up for that. Frankly, I like Andrea as much as Kate, and I really enjoyed this story.
While we have met Andrea and Raphael before, I really enjoyed learning more about them. Although a little slow at times, Andrea is a pretty strong heroine, and she carried this book quite well. I loved the scene where she had to get Ascanio and two other male boudas out of jail for rowdy behavior, and she taught them a lesson on intimidation without marking someone. And the last battle was really exciting. She's so awesome!
I can't forget to mention how much I liked Roman's part in this story. Being a very powerful volhv (aka, a Russian druid), he was key to much of the action in this story, and I found him very intriguing. I'd love to see a lot more of him in future installments!
The next story is the novella, Magic Gifts, previously released as a free eBook. This one has Kate and Curran trying to save a little boy from a gold necklace that's slowly strangling him to death. There's lots of action in this one, but I was bummed this was something I had already read.

A spin off to the Kate Daniels series. Andrea Nash best friend to Kate has got her own adventure and its highly entertaining. I want more Nash adventures or more side characters adventure. Great read.

This is a book I had to read because when I skipped it last reading round, I was vague on some details that referenced it in book 6.
Now, this book wasn't a favorite. In fact, I didn't quite like it nor hate it and that's a reflection on the MC of this novella.
I like Andrea as a secondary character, but she isn't as interesting to me as Kate, her past and personality.
It didn't quite grip me due to disinterest in the main characters of the novella, but of no-fault to the Andrews' writing prowess. Impeccable, always.
