I like Andrea. I like Raphael. Together they explode. This was an interesting offshoot of Kate's stories.
I came down with tonsillitis and a head cold, one after the other, during my reading of Gunmetal Magic, and while I'm not saying the reading experience was bad enough to lower my immune system's defences, I'm not NOT saying that either.
I'm joking. Mostly.
At the risk of repeating myself, Andrea Nash is quite possibly the worst character to dedicate a full-length novel to in this universe. She's too like Kate Daniels in occupation, tragic backstory and romance to distinguish herself, and it makes this outing feel so insubstantial by default. It doesn't help that its plagued by misogynistic pitfalls like with the needless introduction of Rebecca, Raphael's new love interest (but not really): described as unbelievably beautiful but vain, and of course, an idiot, because there will always be a subset of people that NEED to believe this about people they think are better looking than them. Especially with women. Then there's just the regular storytelling fumbles like how Andrea just decides she's sick of feeling shame about her beastkin form in the span of one otherwise unremarkable scene with Raphael early in the book . . . and that's basically it. What even is the point of the rest of the book? Getting back together with Raphael, a side-character at best, isn't exactly novel-length worthy.
This really should have been Dali's book. There, I said it.

I wasn't planning on reading GUNMETAL MAGIC because I thought it was just a novella but thankfully I got a copy in the mail to review from the publisher, found out that I was wrong and dove right in. Not only did I really enjoy getting to know Andrea better but I loved seeing Kate, Curran and some other characters through someone else's eyes. I love the Kate Daniels world and I love Ilona Andrews writing style. I vow never to NOT read one of their books again.
Andrea is bad ass and It was great watching her grow and change in the book. I have always liked her but now I can't imagine not having her involved in this series. We learn so much about Andrea as well as Raphael throughout GUNMETAL MAGIC and I enjoyed every moment of it. There were a ton of great action packed scenes spread out throughout the novel. The scenes with Andrea and Raphael were pleasantly awkward, frustrating and down right naughty at times. I laughed a lot, was super pissed off along with Andrea at some points and got a bit teary eyed in other moments. One of my favorite scenes was towards the front when Andrea lays the smack down on some Bouda's that were sent to talk to her, she really knows how to hold her own.
I highly recommend the Kate Daniel series as well as The Edge Series by Ilona Andrews . They are both fantastic and will knock your socks off.
