Gunmetal Magic is a side story set in the world of Kate Daniels. It follows Kates best friend Andrea and her adventures as she tries to help find the killers of four pack members all while learning what it means to break up with a jaded Bouda who is very much still in love with her...
It was nice to see this world through the eyes of a different character. Usually while reading these books, we’re seeing everything through Kates eyes. All of the Pack politics and what it means to be a shape shifter aren’t really delved into because while Kate is a part of the pack, she’s still a human. Everything she’s learned about the Pack and how to deal with them has come from a third party. So it was cool to see the inner workings and how things are for an actual shapeshifter who has to deal with navigating all of the nuances that comes with being in or around the pack.
The difference between this book and a regular Kate Daniels book for me is that after finishing, while I did enjoy it, I didn’t feel like an entire book was needed to tell this story, it could have been shortened 100 pages to read as a short story. As is usual with these books, there was a “monster of the week” type character which Andrea had to face, but it all felt really convoluted and confusing to me. I didn’t 100% understand what was going on when I was reading it. I ENJOYED it most definitely, but I was scratching my head the entire way through and nothing was cleared up for me in the end. Another read through the story might help with that, but I didn’t enjoy it THAT much.
I would have rathered had some more domestic type interactions and conversations, FIGHTS even, between Andrea and Raphael, than spend most of the time following Andrea going on a wild goose chase for some deity who wasn’t even strong enough to do his own dirty work.
This was a REALLY great book for Andrea though. It gave a better insight into why she is the way she is and why she has made some of her decisions regarding the Pack and her duties to the pack in the previous books. In Gunmetal Magic you get to see Andrea fight and overcome her demons. You get to see her face those demons and come out on top. I love me some crazy as long as its channeled in a manner that isn’t destructive to those around them and Andrea is definitely crazy. I think that’s why she and Kate clicked so well. But it’s always entertaining and makes it easier to empathize with a character when you know where that crazy comes from and this book let you get a first hand look at where Andreas “crazy” comes from.
Gunmetal Magic definitely could have been shorter, I would have been okay with Andrea just doing a simple job and not having to deal with all of the BS that transpired. But this certainly was a good book and I’m glad that I picked it up.

The plot is a bit confused and the Egyptian mythologie not very well used compères to the others Mythologie they play with. But the writing style make this book a very entertaining one. I had a very very good time with Andrea even if this book was more turned toward romance compared to the rest of the serie. Very addictive anyway like all the Kate Daniel books I couldn’t put it down ...
I was so excited when I first heard about this book and I was even more exciting when Amazon told me they__d finally shipped it. The first thing I did was grab the book, hug it and then start reading. My expectations were rather high, because Ilona Andrews is just that amazing an author, and I wasn__t disappointed.
The story is fast paced, packed full of action and with a lot of funny lines. When I wasn__t cursing Raphael for being stupid I was laughing at his stupidity and charming ways. That was a lot of fun! I also loved how Andrea and Raphael__s story was incorporated into the Kate Daniels series. I didn__t have the feeling that it was an actually Kate Daniels (not enough magic going on), but it was just a perfect story for both the main characters and the universe it was set it. I also loved the fact that we got to see one of the beasties again that was introduced into a Kate novella (and was also part of this book). That didn__t happen before in any of the books I have read so far, and I read a lot, and I loved that. It made the book relate to Kate even more.
All in all, this book made my weekend. The story was a real page-turner and gave me a deeper insight into the shape shifter society that previous books kind of lacked. I really hope for the future that there is going to be another book like this in the Kate Daniels universe. Maybe Derek or Julie__ now that would be fun!
