Gunmetal Magic is a spin off from Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series featuring Andrea Nash. It begins a few weeks after Andrea was summarily dismissed from the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, her shape shifter status having been revealed in [b:Magic Slays|8559047|Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5)|Ilona Andrews|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1288727226s/8559047.jpg|13427398]. Having spent some time metaphorically licking her wounds, mourning not only the loss of her career but also the messy demise of her relationship with Raphael, she is working for Kate at Cutting Edge when she is assigned to investigate the deaths of four Pack members. The murders uncover the theft of a priceless artifact that leads Andrea to an Egyptian God determined to rise again, and suddenly Andrea is fighting for her life and the lives of those she loves.
The world building is phenomenal as always, of course I am familiar with most of it having read the Kate Daniels series but Andrea's character offers a slightly different perspective. The action is frantic, and often violent given the nature of the were's. Andrea is kick ass and doesn't shy away from any physical confrontation.
Much of the character angle of the novel involves Andrea coming to terms with her werehyena (bouda) nature. As a beastkin she endured a horrific childhood and has avoided the Pack as much as possible, but now she is outed she has to find a way to make peace with who she is and the Clan that claims rights to her.
There is romance too of course with Andrea and Raphael's relationship in a mess to begin with. It takes some sorting for these two stubborn characters to work out their differences, providing both some hilarious and achingly tender moments.
Many of the Kate Daniels series characters make appearances including Kate, Curran and Ghastek. Though Gunmetal Magic is technically the start of a new series, familiarity with the Kate Daniels series would definitely enhance the reading experience of this debut.
I loved Gunmetal Magic and I am impressed that Andrews has been able to continue the momentum of her well established world into Gunmetal Magic. I can't wait for the next installment.
*A fabulous birthday surprise from Jackie!

This is the book they wrote for fans of siade characters. A testament to their strofn characterisation but seems to exist more as a reminder that characters other than the leads can have their own arc. Also maybe to weave in some Egyptian mythology.
The plot of [b:Gunmetal Magic|12288282|Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels, #5.5)|Ilona Andrews|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1331230049s/12288282.jpg|17264774] was good, but for some reason the story felt slow. It didn't flow as naturally as the other Kate Daniels books, and I just wasn't invested in Andrea/Raphael this round. It may be because I've been marathoning this series, so I'll take a break to see if that improves things.
I liked this novella about Andrea and Raphael. It's a nice companion piece to the Kate Daniels series.
Yea! I finally got to read Gunmetal Magic! (Summer quarter is not really fun to do let me tell you.)
I'm not sure if it was intentional or not on the authors part, but her books have been appealing more and more to my sense of humor. In Gunmetal Magic, I was giggling like a little school girl practically every other page.
I liked how Ilona Andrews explained Andrea's point-of-view on why she made a certain decision. I think it was well done. Plus, it was cool to see a bit more of Raphael (who I adore).
The mythology... I think I actually drooled and did a fist pump. I love how Ilona Andrews weaves mythology into her books. It's so cool and plus she somehow doesn't manage to do an info dump on the reader.
I don't know if Ilona Andrews would do a second Andrea book, but if she does I'm so buying it! (Well, I would probably buy anything the two of them writes.)

I liked this one a lot more the second time around. I just love Andrea and Raphael :)

I was surprised by how much I liked it. Enjoyed Raphael & Andreas mating circus very much.
This book is only a novella because it is from Andrea's point of view rather than Kate's. Do not be fooled, it is a necessary book to read for the series to continue to make sense.
I really enjoyed reading this. Andrea is a character that doesn't have the same background as Kate and it gives insight to why she does the things she does. It is also refreshing to see an author who has the ability to write from different point of views

I listened to the audio book. Ilona Andrews can do no wrong. This is a great little novella if you need a Kate Daniels fix
