Gunmetal Magic

Ilona Andrews

4.07 AVERAGE

1st read Sept 16 2012

Set in the dystopian future of Atlanta, where magic comes and goes with tech taking over during down times. This is the story of Kate Daniels' best friend Andrea, told in her point of view. She is no longer connected to the order and is working as a P.I. for Kate and the pack. She is hired to investigate a break in and the deaths of shape shifter guards working for her ex-boyfriend. It leads to the big bad trying to get power and Andrea and her group of friends working to thwart this from happening. Very Kate Daniel like.

Still the background story of her trying to come to terms with who she is and where she fits in, gives this a special flair. It is not just her ex-boyfriend, Rafael and her figuring out where they stand, but her figuring out where she stands with the pack. And now the she is not defined by the Order, how she can define herself.

Different than Kate yet many of the same elements. This definitely was a romance whereas I don't consider Kate Daniels a romance though a romance happens in one of her books. Still the story holds the major part of the story at least 1/2 of the time. The romance part was a bit silly but also a bit fun. Her figuring out where she belongs, very good story there. And the story of the Big bad trying to get power, as always, exciting, engaging, and well told.

Great read. Don't know if I like it better than a Kate story or not, excellent. I really liked Roman and want more of him, perhaps and novella or book?

Re-read Sept 20, 2014

On the re-read, I found the ending to be dragging in a big way. The relationship conflict was a hoot but getting and joining the pack with the challenges was good too but getting to the end with the uber creatures dragged.

Same feeling on re-read.

The Andrews never fail to write a great story and this is no exception. I've always liked Andrea and it was great to see things from her point of view. I felt really bad for her with her history (which we learn a lot about in this book) and everything going on between her a Raphael. We get to see several of our old favorite characters, Beast Lord and Kate (nice to see them from a different perspective), Jim, Derek, Doolittle. We also get to see some minor characters take on a larger roll with Asciano and Roman. I really loved both of these two and hope to continue to see them in the Kate Daniels books.

Gunmetal Magic takes place in the Kate Daniels universe, but it is told from Kate’s best friend Andrea Nash’s POV.

Andrea is enlisted by the Pack to investigate the brutal deaths of four Pack members (flying solo b/c Kate is busy doing something else with Curran). When she arrives at the crime scene, she discovers that all four victims died of snake poisoning, venom being one of the few things Shapeshifters aren’t naturally immune to.

Weird thing, though . . . Based on the width of the bite marks, the snakes are people-sized.

All of this is made more fun by the fact that the victims are employed by Raphael, necessitating their first interaction after months of avoidance.

Do they immediately fall into each other’s loving arms, you ask?

N O P E.

Is it worth the painful journey?

Absolutely.

Also, as always, the mythology is super cool. This time it’s primarily Egyptian.

Magic Gifts

Magic Gifts is the story of what is happening with Kate while Andrea is running around solving crime by herself in Gunmetal Magic.

Kate and Curran are just trying to enjoy a nice evening out when a magic necklace chokes the life out of a Journeyman of the People, causing two vampires to attempt a killing spree.

Good times.

The same magic necklace finds itself around the neck of a seven year old child, which causes Kate and Curran to claim the child, in order to save him, and the People to claim the child, b/c the necklace killed an investment and must be investigated.

Guess who wins?

Also, the People suck.

Julie is enlisted to help determine what kind of magic the necklace has, and discovers some indecipherable runes that lead everyone on a merry chase through Norse mythology.

This story was presumably written to appease rabid Kate fans when instead of a new Kate book, a book from Andrea’s POV was published.

I am appeased.

It took me a while to get into it. But once I did I ended up adoring Andrea herself and her relationship with Raphael.

I was really excited to get an Andrea story. Andrea has been a great friend to Kate. She is tough and aggressive. Not to say she doesn't have faults, but she is truly an awesome character.

Andrea has been gone a long time, and this book is not long after she returns. She's forced to work with her ex Raphael. These two know how to play crazy head games with each other. The first encounter, Raphael pissed me off so bad! He really pulled a number on Andrea and I just wanted to beat him over the head! His outright attack to Andrea's feelings is almost unforgivable. But, this is Raphael, and of course, he'll play his way out of it. The mating rituals get so out of control its hilarious! Those two really know how to make a statement!

Roman becomes a more prominent character, and his attitude causes some relationship tension. I really enjoyed him and his part in the story. He's a lot of fun and I can't wait to see how much more he brings to the series. Barabas makes a big appearance. I didn't realize he played the Pack's lawyer as well. Comes in handy now that Andrea is not in the Order. Of course, she's not officially in the Pack either, so having the Beast Lord's mate for a best friend comes in handy!

Everyone works together to keep this creepy, evil character from gathering enough strength to take on the worst of the worst. Some of the creatures really freaked me out. I hate snakes. Andrea really does the business proud and shows Atlanta that Cutting Edge can take on some big jobs.

Greatest moment: Purple shag carpet!

A bit slow moving in the beginning but I enjoyed getting the other cast of characters. Even if Andrea is written similarly to Kate (except a sharpshooter instaed of swordswoman) I still just liked it. The Black Volv is funny too I'm glad he was back. I read this after reading book 6 in the Kate Daniels series so I already knew the end results with Andrea and Raphael especially but it still was a fun read and a break from how heavy Kate is getting.
