Though I had guessed some things accurately I was genuinely surprisd at some revelations. A great read that was different from the run of the mill suspense book endings
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an early copy.
The first thought I have is simply: dang.
This book was really a wild ride. There’s like, basically nothing I can say that isn’t a spoiler, but it definitely took turns I wasn’t expecting. Were one or two of them gratuitous? Meh, maybe lol. But it was the stay up all night, read in one sitting, forget about the stuff that’s bothering you kind of ride that I’m really grateful for right now.
We begin with our sweet friend Claire waking up in the wilderness and being taken to the hospital. She has literally no memory of what happened to get her there until it hits her: her friends Jesse and Kate were with her when she went out there, and they didn’t come back with her. What ensues is a pretty typical amnesia-type thriller, one of the ones where the main girl is absurdly tricky at finding evidence that the fucking FBI somehow missed. You know. Such a well-used trope but still somehow gets me roped in every time.
Well, the typical thriller doesn’t stay typical. One of the reveals was one that made me put the book down for a second, and one of them was a reveal that made one of the characters have to pull over to the side of the road and vomit. It’s one of those stories where even if you guess some of the ending you’d have to be a psychic to call it all.
Some of the things that happen in this story are so very adult-like while still being obviously teenaged. I feel like that’s authentic of teens: they think they’re grown, their families think they’re kids, and the world treats them like some weird in between. Too old to be coddled, too young to understand how taxes work. I just appreciate the way those parts were written.
I’ve read every single one of Kara Thomas’s books now and I think they’ve all been really well done in their own ways. There’s always plenty of characters so the ending isn’t obvious, but not too many that it’s apparent that they were only added as red herrings. I mean, over the course of the story I suspected like 8 people, all with decent enough reason, and still didn’t fully call the who and especially not the why.
Romance has a part in this book, not a huge one, but it is the catalyst for a few different things. And I really liked Claire’s connection with like, everyone she was interested in romantically. Maybe some of those came back to bite me? I won’t say, but I suspected them all at one point or another.
This was a fun read and I really think if you’re looking for a YA thriller that’s not wack, I think you wouldn’t go wrong with any of Kara Thomas’s works.

I thought the plot was great and it really picked up in part 2 onward, but a lack of interest in the characters really let the whole thing down. Still a good read though.
4 or 4.5 stars.
"How do you keep going?"
"You don't really have a choice. If you can't do it for yourself, you do it for the people who love you."
Very twisty, and then at the end it got me again.
Like in The Cheerleaders, Thomas handles survivor's guilt and grief better than most other mystery writers I've read. Many just brush it off for thrill but her characters' feelings--their despair--stay with you.

Spoiler
I thought the twist about the "dysfunctional" (trying to be vague) family was sorta out of nowhere, especially after the first part of the book in Claire's POV. But it made more sense the more time we spent with Kat.Like in The Cheerleaders, Thomas handles survivor's guilt and grief better than most other mystery writers I've read. Because I finished it, it gets .25 stars. But this book. 100% top 5 worst books I have Ever read. That’s all because of the last 30 pages. Seriously that “twist” made me hate all of these characters way more. Aside from Ben and Claire. But they suck also. The “reasoning” for the confederate flag was the first red flag, but my god.
Also please please please narrators eat a green apple, swallow your spit, do something so we don’t have to here it smacking around in your mouth.

Graphic: Incest
As someone that likes every Kara Thomas book more than the last, this one blows away anything she has written before. The twists, turns, and emotional journey that this book takes you on is outstanding. And describing the plot is almost too dangerous to try for fear of spoilers.
