This is where I lay down my sword.
This is a very popular series of books with an enthusiastic fan base and that’s the only reason I made it this far.
It will get better as you go they say. Well it hasn’t gotten better in 4.5 books, so I’m done.
These are trashy dime store romance novels, thinly disguised as fantasy.
I want the hours back that I wasted reading this drivel.

Book #4 of the Dresden Files and wow what a ride this one was. This story picks up shortly after the events of book two, Harry is a wanted man by the vampires, his girlfriend has left town and is just one bloodsucking kill away from becomming a vampire herself. Harry blames himself for her situation and has spent every waking moment trying to find a cure for vampirism. Harry has hit his lowest of lows, he is about to lose his business, his apartment, and possibly his life.
On top of all this he learns that his aunt has sold his debt to the Winter Queen of Faerie who shows up offering Harry a deal of three favors and his debt is clear. His first task is to clear her name in the murder of the Summer Queen's right hand man the Summer Knight. Then to add insult to injury Harry is put on trial by the White Council, if he succeeds in helping the Winter Queen he lives, if he failes the council will turn Harry over to the vampires to save their own ass.
This book is non-stop action from beginning to end and is really the first book in the series where you need to read the prior book to understand what is going on. This was my favorite so far because we learn about Harry's past why the White Council hates him, what happened in his past with his former master and love of his life. I look forward to what happens next to Harry. If you like sci-fi/fantasy or as I have said before The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer these books are like a combination of the two with a bit of Supernatural as well. These are fun quick reads and can't recommend them enough! 5 out of 5!

Yes, I read it in a day. Getting over the stomach flu is a great time to read! Anyway, I really enjoyed this episode in Harry Dresden's adventures. The pace is swift, the characters engaging, and the plot complex. Lots of very cool supernatural stuff going on. Harry's a bit of a downer sometimes, but he does get his mojo back (I don't think that qualifies as a spoiler). :)

I've never been a big fan of Faerie tales (not to be confused with fairy tales - big fan of those). Y'know, the Summer and Winter Courts populated by eternally battling and always slightly evil fairies who pretty much have no redeeming personal traits? Which is to say, this was not my favorite Dresden novel to date. To Butcher's credit, he does do a *little* to make a few of the fairies at least a little bit not awful. But... meh. On to the next.

Always a fun adventure!

Big step up in quality. Most of the criticisms of the first books still apply though.

No rating, because now I know for sure this particular books are not for me. Seems like I’m not so much into popcorn books.

Summer Knight is the real turning point of the Dresden Files. It is THE book where you're either hooked or not. It's the one that brings the rest of the fantastical into the world and it's almost like Butcher finally said "yep... now I've got a multibook deal" and went all in.

I love the addition of the Faerie hierarchy and meeting the Ladies, Queens, and Mothers. They are both fun and semi-historical. Bringing back the werewolves was a fun way to do that as well. We start to see how interconnected the magical (?) world is.

Looking forward to the reread of book #5.

Another great read from Jim Butcher. Even though I know that Harry wouldn't die afterall it's only book four in the series I was gripped right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I had to know who killed the Summer Knight and why did they do it? Would the White Council support Harry?
