I liked this book a lot more before I finished it and realised that there's barely any plot. Don't get me wrong, I love books that almost entirely center around vibes and feelings, but you need strong, interesting, lovable characters to make that work and Circe just doesn't quite hit the mark. I don't hate any of the characters, but I don't like any either, and I don't care for them.
Graphic: Violence, Pregnancy
Moderate: Rape, Sexual assault, Torture, Toxic relationship, Trafficking
Minor: Infidelity, Slavery

I don’t really understand the point of this book. It lacks a good story line and its confusing to me how Circe is the main character but is a side character in everything in the book. The insane stories that don’t really fit together and are separate in a way from each other confuse me. There are so many loose ends that dont make sense and dont go anywhere. This book is at least wayy better than The song of achilles
Wow. I absolutely loved this book. This is the most I've truly loved a book in long time. (long being over a few months lol.)
Circe includes retellings of a few different stories such as The Iliiad and The Odessey, but it ultimately centers on the goddess Circe, her life, and the roles that she played in these famous heroes lives. We follow her life through thousands of years; from birth, childhood, and her long adulthood, and it is truly enchanting.
I love Circe so much. Her character is constantly shifting and evolving. She had one of the best character arcs I might have ever read, honestly. She heals, learns to deal with loss, immortality, mortality, fate, love, and so much more. Throughout this book you can feel the weight of centuries of life, as if you are really living it. I got through Circe quite quick and I can't really explain it, but the way time passes was just written so well. Madeline Miller's writing is so beautiful and poetic and kept me deeply invested in this story. The plot is slow, but very character-driven, which I personally love. Even then, I still found the plot to be engaging, and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat while reading this.
The mythology in this, like in The Song of Achilles, feels brand new and fresh. One thing I love about Madeline Miller's books is that all of the characters are so real. They're not just legends, they are real people who you can connect to. There's so many themes that I could write a whole essay on, but I really liked the feminist themes in this book. Circe's well-known for turning men into pigs, but seeing the reason after pages of connecting to her character... it is just so heart wrenching. The final line of this book too... oh my god, I just can't.
I loved this book more than I thought I would (more than The Song of Achilles, I fear), and I will treasure it forever.
