I picked up this book last night because it was the monthly read for the APUS R.E.A.D. book club. I finished it tonight. So, this obviously an action packed read, leading me to finish it at a fast pace.
What I love about this book though, is the way it celebrates airline culture and pays respect to everyone who works to make it happen.
Even though I myself never fly (at this point in my life) my grandfather was a pilot, my brother is a pilot, and my sister in law a flight attendant. The people who do this work are passionate about it. One of my favorite parts of this book is when a character talked about the five weeks of intense training flight attendants go through- they are not there to serve drinks. They are there to protect passengers.
My only hesitancy with this book is with the antagonists. On one hand, I really like that the author fleshed them out more, and tried to bring attention to current world issues. I do remember when our Kurdish allies were abandoned. There was some coverage and outrage, and then the press and people moved on. Bringing back attention to what happened is good, but I do not know about making the antagonists immigrants from that country, it seems to feed into a stereotype. And when the character stated he wanted our country to mourn for once, it just doesn't seem to fit well in present day when there are mass shootings every couple of months that we constantly just move on from.
That is just my personal thoughts so far, and maybe I should not think so deep about it. It was a fun read, and got me out of my book slump.
