The further we get from the late 70s/early 80s, the less relevant John Irving appears. Very much a book of its time.

I bet this ruffles a few feathers down in Florida… Good.

I thought this book was really fantastic. Started rather slow, and it's not the typical schmaltzy story about an orphanage that you might expect (although it can be, which is more than allowable). Great descriptions of things I've never given myself cause to think about (such as the finer details of Larch's profession). Overall, a very good read, although the multitude of subplots, though very rewarding, can often make you feel bogged down.

Reads like one of those 80s movies that are unnecessarily long and nothing really ever happens?
The premise was interesting enough, but the end felt endlessly tedious.
