I read this book in middle school, and remember enjoying it but didn’t remember much about the story. This was a fun re-read. I enjoyed the story and some of the little life lessons. Parts of the story were really sad, the things that some people do to animals is heartbreaking. I really liked that it’s told from the horses perspective. Glad I took time to re-read this.

I was a horse fanatic as a kid, and this was one of the books I read over and over (and OVER and OVER) again. I am so psyched that my edition is on goodreads, since I have an unreasonable attachment to this book.

Beautiful story told from the perspective of the horse, Beauty, which I remember was something really different from other books I had read at the time. I learned some things about horses, and still remember scenes like the fire and Ginger's fate.

The illustrations in this edition are vibrant and gorgeous paintings - same style as the pictured cover here - and were one of my favorite parts of this book.

What a sweet, lovable story. I fell in love with the horse and got a little frustrated about how badly the horses were being used. Definitely a book to read to my Daughter.

Ahhh this one was long overdue for a reread. The book is 95% Sewell having strong opinions on animal welfare but since I also have strong opinions on animal welfare…fine by me. The other 5% was strong opinions on alcoholism, which I did not remember from last time. Given the time, it’s astonishing how much of what Sewell says is functionally correct–we really haven’t learned more about horses, we’re just more confident in what we know–and vindicating how much has been reduced, eliminated, or banned.

But also I love Beauty, I adore Ginger, and Merrylegs, and Captain, and all the rest. Despite the heavy moral overtones, the writing and characterization are still incredibly compelling.

The first book I ever bought, from a garage sale for twenty-five cents!

I'm pretty sure I read this when I was younger. But reading it with Alice was a better experience, for sure. She says she loved it too

I was too small to totally appreciate the depth of the book , but our teacher read it to us in an exciting way , so it's effectively the first ever work of fiction I read..
