It is hard to believe this much story could be packed into a novel just over 350 pages long. It truly felt epic, aided by the excellent narration by Guidall. Wonderful characters and relationships abound and the book has truly laugh out loud moments, particularly between Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear. The conclusion was a real surprise, but did not feel like a cheat of any kind. Looking forward to reading more.

I loved the Longmire TV series. I didn't realize the book would have a touch of humor. It was a good read, but I felt lost some of the time because I wasn't sure who was talking. I don't know if it was a choice, but when Walt was talking to Vic, we would only get she/her and never a name.
So disclaimer here: I’ve watched the show with my Dad first(I didn’t know it was actually books) so I’m going to give my take on both
The tv series actually does the books justice(no pun intended)! That Craig Johnson helped with that truly makes a big difference!! Of course things aren’t the same but, to me, it doesn’t take away from it at all. I think they picked an A+ Walt in Robert Taylor. I love the humor and how Walts character develops.
Henry is my absolute favorite, though in the show he didn’t seem to me as much a lady’s man or as big a man as described, I love how Lou Diamond Phillips portrays him. Henry is “not a man who speaks in contractions” and I think he’s perfect. Before my son was born we considered the name Henry... maybe if we have another boy in the future -winks-
I like how Lucian is more involved in the book(s)! Though I don’t appreciate his and Vics mouths, it takes away from the story in my opinion. I like the Vic in the show WAY better.
The disconnection between Walt and Cady was felt more keenly in the book and I like that the show kind of... fast forwards to their reconnecting.
This book/series gives you all the feels and it deals with some very tough subjects, no holding back! And I think that’s why it’s well-loved. There’s some awful things in this world... but we all need stories like this, to see Walts keep fighting for the truth and justice, for friends and even some not as friendly. Maybe we can even do that too.
All in all this is such a rich series and group of characters!

SO. GOOD. 1/2 star off bcs I thought the ending was too pat, but otherwise AWESOME.
Quite simply, a surprisingly authentic and captivating read. There are so many things to adore about The Cold Dish: the unusual yet beautiful setting, the host of flawed but likeable characters and each twist and turn that leaves you wanting more.
The Cold Dish is a stand-apart, first-class thriller. A tale that simply can't disappoint. Highly recommended.

This one took me over 150 pages to get into it. The last 100 pages are the best. Too many words and too much unneeded details. Also, this felt like it was a second book in a series, not the first. Very slim chance I will continue to read this series.
“There were clouds at the mountains, and the snow pack reflected the sour-lemon sun into one of the most beautiful and perverse sunsets I had ever seen. The clouds were dappled like the hindquarters of an Appaloosa colt, and the beauty kicked just as hard.”
I am very late to the party with the Walt Longmire series. The books have been coming out since 2004 and the TV series has been around since 2012. I know lots of people who have liked both the books and the television program. Who knows why I waited so long.
I am glad that I finally got to this mystery and that I got to hear Guidall read it. George Guidall is one of the best narrators of all time. He brought Walt Longmire to life and no matter how I read the rest of the series, Longmire will always sound like Guidall for me.
This was a good book, well written. Part of the reason I put the quote above is so that I remember the wonderful descriptive language that Johnson uses. This is a mystery book. I expected a good story with a surprise solution at the end. I got that and enjoyed it. However, I also read some beautiful descriptions of Wyoming’s landscape weather and people. That made the story all the better.
I plan to read the rest of this series. I hope I will get to hear Guidall’s voice when I read more about Walt Longmire.
