I wanted to read these because Jason and I enjoyed the series on tv. I think if I hadn't seen the show I might not continue with the series of books. Longmire isn't all that likely in the books. He comes across as kind of a lazy jerk. They made him more likeable in the tv series, so I am hoping, like mnay tv and film things, that his character is more of a conglomerate, and he will become more likeable in the books.
I first read this book exactly three years ago this week. I decided to try it again and upped my rating to four stars from three. I was able to appreciate the dry wit, and could understand the ending on a different level from when I previously read the book.

This book had good and bad elements, but mostly good.
I came to this after watching two seasons of the show and loving it. I truly love the character of Walt Longmire, as well as Henry Standing Bear and Vic Morretti. I love the interplay between them. All of that stuff carried over (or I should say, was translated very well into the show). some of the side characters like Turk and Ferg are quite different, but still interesting.
As for the plot... it was pretty convoluted. 40 pages from the end I still didn't know who the murderer was. There is also a great deal of Indian/Native American spirituality going on, which made for some moving scenes. the author is, however, extremely long-winded in places and it took me much longer to get through than I expected thanks to those areas of slog.
I'd still pick up the next one and I still love Walt.

I finished it, but barely. Love the TV series though.

I don't know why, but I have watched Longmire on TV religiously...a tv show that is popular amongst seniors...and I am drawn to it and can't stop watching. I am not sure what that says about me. I had no idea that the show was based on a book character...but last weekend at The Book Thing, I found the book shoved in the mystery section and grabbed it--- first for my Dad, until I looked closely and saw a sticker mentioning Longmire. I decided the book was mine....or that I would read it before passing it to my father to never be seen again.
The story IS Longmire....so if you like the show, you will enjoy the book. The book centers around the Sheriff in Wyoming, Walt Longmire. There is mystery, that are interactions with the local Native American tribe, there are snowstorms...and wide open spaces. And the best, curmudgeonly dialogue. I couldn't help but snicker and keep reading.
This first book finds a group of rapist that didn't serve a just amount of time being shot and killed....the mystery is who is doing it and whether Walk can stop the killings. There is also an attempt to get Walt out of his funk---- of being a new widow and also an attempt to make him straighten out his life. I greatly enjoyed the story and plan to continue reading the series.
Read if you enjoy well written dialogue--- or if you enjoy wide open spaces....or if you like mysteries. Hell, just read it because it is enjoyable and you need a new world to explore.
