I had expectations about Craig Johnson's Longmire series after watching and rewatching the Netflix shows. I was mystified for the first part of the book, trying to relate the characters to those on the show. The story line is so different that I had to settle in to basically reading a whole new adventure of a parallel universe Walt Longmire!
In this version, Longmire is not mourning over the loss of his wife, and is readily chasing an attractive woman (three years hence). Perhaps the later novels go back in time and deal with everything that was an overriding theme in the TV show.
Once I accepted the new premise, I had to understand who was talking, since Johnson doesn't use the conventional "then Walt said..." I ended up rereading many paragraphs to see who said what.
In the end the story came together, and I had surmised the "bad actor" despite the obfuscation.
Johnson's strength is in his descriptions and analogies, which were beautiful and raw.
I probably won't read more of Johnson even though I love "Henry," "Ruby," and most of all "Vic."

Once again I have my Goodreads friends to blame for making me read yet another series that I will now have to devote my precious time to reading. How many times must I bend to the will of my reading compatriots and suffer through discovering a fantastic series for myself? I have resisted beginning this series for long enough. Life is too short to put off what is bound to be time well spent.

If this first book is an indicator of the series (and I feel sure it is, even though it is the author’s debut novel), I will be spending some nice quality time among this new set of characters as they pursue justice in modern day rural Wyoming. I’ve also waited to see the TV series, just so I could read the books first, but these characters and setting are so real that it’s like I am watching a high quality show already.

The pacing of this novel is a little slower than I’m used to but it’s entirely appropriate to the plot and the setting. I think I was also reading it a tad slower than usual. It just seemed to deserve more attention somehow. As a person who was born in and now lives in the West, I can fully appreciate the nuances of the descriptive phrases and interacting cultures that are on display throughout this novel. I’ll definitely be reading more.

My ADHD brain didn't want to read it any longer. In other words, I got distracted by something else and never returned to it. This happened quite some time before the date marked.

Damn that was good! I did not see that coming and I feel like I should have.

And now I want to watch the show again and read the next book in the series and visit Wyoming (in summertime obviously).

Set in the magnificent mountains of rural Wyoming, this is the 1st in the Walt Longmire series. Walt Longmire is fabulous as the rugged county sheriff, as is the whole ensemble of wonderful supporting characters, especially Walt's long time friend, Henry Standing Bear. It is easy to see why the entire series is so popular & why it has been adapted into a television series.

I am late to the Walt Longmire books, having devoured and loved the television series. The writing did not disappoint and added more depth to the characters I know and love.
