The writing was good and the detail was well done and the characters dimensional and relate-able and the dialogue worked well. However they writing style was annoying, it was very scattershot and hopped around without finishing the current train of content. There was a lot of interruptions to the story line without any real transition.
Excellent characters and story. I will read all of this series!
A very enjoyable novel. I loved all the characters and found the mystery interesting enough although sideplots and descriptions were move intriguing than the actual case.
Will most likely continue the series and try watching the show.

Craig Johnson does a damn fine job of creating an interesting story and cast of characters. This holds true throughout the series not just in this opener.
After three and a half years I have come back to the beginning to listen to these stories again. If that is not a recommendation for them I don’t know what is.

Decided to read this because the author will visit Johnson County this summer.
The author's hometown has a population of 25.
" . . . the turnover rate would spin your Rolodex."
A car named Lola, and a Sinclair station.
Walt, the sheriff, tells law stories to his love interest. In "The Chance," to which I am listening, the woman is an FBI agent and is telling law stories to her love interest.
Similar names are hard: Cody and Cady, Vic and Vonnie. VIN number. No.

The action in the book is its only saving grace, but every other part of the book dragged on to the point where I would skip paragraphs and not miss anything. Honestly the first 30% of this book felt pretty unnecessary. The use of the word aroused or arousal made me want to throw the book, especially when it was used towards women that literally were just existing, they weren't even part of the main plot.
Also I lowkey side with the main "villain" of this story. Three boys rape a girl with fetal alcohol syndrome and get off??? nah. If the law won't do anything, our hero will haha. Also very interesting how in the same book where pretty much every female character was sexualized to an extent the main point at the end is how often women are dismissed or overlooked. Real weird. I think I'm done with all westerns written by men
