I anticipated it being different from the TV series but it is very very different
After getting hooked on the Longmire television series I wanted to try the books that inspired it. Although it is generally felt that the book is always better - I think I enjoyed the book more having seen the series. The visual landscape immediately comes to mind and the central characters in most cases are very well chosen. I am looking forward to reading all the books in this series.
This is a fun read. Johnson gives away fewer clues and offers less opportunity for the reader to pull the pieces together than other authors, but that's okay with me. It was a fast and enjoyable read.
I had a really hard time staying motivated to read this. Took me much longer than books of similar lengths. I appreciate the style of writing pays tribute to your smaller modern western town, and that part of that may be a slower pace. I appreciate the skill of the author to to artfully describe and convey the beauty of the west. But it needed something else to build suspense or keep you excited, and I found that lacking.
I have been loving this series, which is full of interesting characters. The setting is almost a character in itself. The book features a good mystery, some exciting action, characters that you really care about, and perhaps even the ghosts of long-dead Cheyenne warriors (although Walt doesn’t think so).

I enjoyed this 1st instalment as much as the TV show. While this has an obviously different Longmire as the protagonist it still is clearly entwined with the visual rending of the show. I look forward to the next instalment.
The first 60% of this book quite literally bored me to tears. I have been in a reading slump & this was my third attempt at reading something that caught my attention - it was almost my last straw
If you like the series on A & E you will enjoy the book. Excellent characterization. Henry standing bear's brilliant. can't wait to get the next one.
This is the first in the Walt Longmire mystery series and I really enjoyed it. Although I love the TV series, the book is much better. There is more humor and more depth to the characters. The evocations of the Wyoming landscape are very powerful. There is also a lot of incredible action. I think the relationship between Walt and his best friend, Henry Standing Bear is terrific. The window into Cheyenne culture (albeit from Walt's perspective) provides a welcome relief from the usual crappy Indian stereotypes we usually see in American pop culture. I'm now reading the next in the series which picks up right where The Cold Dish left off and it's even better.
