I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the dry wit of the main character had me cracking up while reading this book. Can't wait to read more books in this series.

Enjoyed it. Loved the warmth of the whole thing, the depth of the characters, and the laid back style. It did, however, feel a little slow and maybe a little too cozy for me. Liked it, but not sure if I will go onto the next in the series. Worth reading!

Love the characters and the author's voice. I will read more!

First, let me preface this review by stating that when I binged watched four seasons of Longmire on Netflix, I had no idea it was based on a series of books. I just took the recommendation and then proceeded to hermit myself away for a week watching it.

The same person who recommended the show then lent me The Cold Dish to read and at first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Walt Longmire, who in the show was so grizzled, solemn, and monosyllabic came across as a bit of a jokester and definitely more talkative that his silver screen counterpart. At times, he almost seemed too two-dimensional for me to really get into. After bringing it up to my friend, his only suggestion was to keep reading and to separate myself from the TV show. So I did just that and lo and behold, Craig Johnson’s The Cold Dish blossomed for me.

Johnson brought Absaroka County and its populace to life as only a master could. Longmire is the perfect modern-day Western hero. Paunchy, depressed, middle aged, beer drinking, ex-military, intelligent man that both men and women can stand behind. Johnson’s cast of supporting characters are just as wonderfully life-like. Longmire’s bantering with Henry Standing Bear and his support both for and from Vic Moretti keep the story alive when it threatens to lull.

I can’t recommend this one enough. The read is quick. The plot is thick and the ending was a legitimate surprise. Longmire and his deputies and friends will keep you wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars!

I do have to warn of a possible rape trigger. Johnson doesn’t go into any real intense detail but there is some description and no one should be caught off guard.

This book was on my radar after watching the first season of A&E's Longmire on the tube. The tv series has the same flavor as this first novel in Craig Johnson's series. I like both. Looking forward to reading more of the novels and watching the second season of the tv show.

Reading because I recently watched all of the tv series. Have to say that I like the show Walt better than book Walt.

Loved it! Started reading the series after watching the TV show (which I also loved). Kind of wish I'd read the books first because some of the characters are not the same as the TV show and that made it a little confusing.

Good story, great writing. Looking forward to the rest of the books.
