Loved it! Started reading the series after watching the TV show (which I also loved). Kind of wish I'd read the books first because some of the characters are not the same as the TV show and that made it a little confusing.
Good story, great writing. Looking forward to the rest of the books.

I've had a lot of people recommend the show Longmire to me, so I thought I'd try one of the books in the series first before giving the show a try.
I really liked the character Longmire, and the supporting cast of characters was great too. The book nails small-town atmosphere, with all the good and bad that entails. The crime itself was interesting, and the setting in Wyoming was a nice change of pace from most mysteries.
My only problem is I thought the ending was disappointing and out-of-character for the murderer. I still really liked the book, but that frustrated me because I had been enjoying how the book was avoiding lazy mystery tropes, and then it just relied on one to wrap stuff up.
Am now curious to give the show a try next.

Interesting. It seems that while I will always choose a book over a film adaptation, I usually like a TV adaptation more than the original (see also: Game of Thrones). I think this book was a bit too American Detective for me. It's a shame, because I want all the Longmire in my life.
It took me awhile to get into this book but once the main character, Longmire, stop wallowing in self pity, he became quite charming and witty. The mystery aspect was great too, I never guessed who the killer was. That makes a good book for me. :)
Grabbed the book because I vaguely liked the show in a passing sort of a way. Turns out what Craig Johnson writes resonates with me, taking forays into odd side canyons along the way, and mixing culture the way I grew up with. This, than, and the other thing: A nice stew over time, all the flavors got together.
Totally not a subject matter I normally read, but by the kittens and sweet sky, I'll be reading the rest of his work if it's similar.
Best book I've picked up this year, and that's out of some damn fine reading.

The book moves at a leisurely pace. Don't get complacent though because when the action comes it is fast and furious. The start of the book (first 100) pages moves slower than the end. It is worth it though because you know Johnson is setting up a world you are going to be visiting again real soon. I thought the end was fabulous and look forward to reading the 2nd book in the series.

I wanted so much to like this book, but, sadly, didn't. Half-way through and I'm bored silly; I keep falling asleep; Johnson tried so hard to fill pages, wandered through tangents and mind-numbing descriptions, and, too many times, I had to keep re-reading to figure out who the hell was talking - so no discernible voice variation suited to the characters speaking. That being said, the book is MUCH BETTER than the series, the casting in which is so off base, the acting and dialogue so horrible.
I usually don’t think it’s fair to judge an adaptation against its source material and vice versa so I’m disappointed in myself for saying that I like the tv show more. At least in this first book. The best parts of the show—Henry and Longmire’s friendship and Vic’s relentless, profanity-laden attempts to deal with her new life in a small town—were present in this and were still great but the story didn’t quite work for me. The show did this particular storyline but it ended differently and, in my opinion, in a much more satisfactory way. I hope I can enjoy the next book a little more.
First book in the Craig Johnson series and the first one that I read. Overall a pretty good book but there are a few places in the book where I was confused, but had to keep reading in order to figured it out (I'll help you out..he does a lot of dreaming and stuff in the spiritual world). Despite that a very well done book and I didn't have an idea who was the bad guy until the end.
