Fun classic mystery in modern day Wyoming. Loved the humor and it kept me guessing! If I wasn't already a fan of the tv show, I would be now as a new fan of the novels!

I might have found a new favorite mystery series! So glad I read this.

Close your eyes and picture with me, if you will. Small town in Wyoming. Trucks. Pancake breakfasts. Rifles and shotguns. Mountains. Snow. Log cabins. Politics. And a lot of interesting characters. Welcome to Absaroka County, Wyoming.

Walt Longmire is the sheriff of Absaroka County, and he's been sheriff for 24 years. The book kicks off with Longmire investigating the death of Cody Pritchard, who was found dead in an apparent hunting accident. Pritchard was convicted a few years back in the gang rape of a local Cheyenne girl who, born with fetal alcohol syndrome, had diminished capacity. Many in the community felt the sentence was too light and justice wasn't served. Walt's investigation leads him throughout the local communities and the Cheyenne reservation, uncovering skeletons and a lot of old wounds for everyone.

Craig Johnson does a great job of painting colorful characters and realistic relationships. The friendship between Walt and Henry Standing Bear was one of my favorite parts of the book. He has a unique team assisting him at the sheriff's department, from sassy Ruby, his dispatcher / den mother, to Vic Moretti, his foul-mouthed deputy and hand-picked replacement when he retires. But beyond the characters, who I dearly love, Johnson crafted a good mystery with lots of twists and turns. I had no idea how it would end, but when he got us there I could see how the clues fit together.

If you are looking for a good mystery series with great characters, give this one a try. I can't wait to start the second book.

Solid start to the Long mire series

I did find the first 2/3 of the story was a little too slow paced for my taste, but having seen this tv series first years ago, I was really interested in reading this first one. It was like hanging out with an old friend. I vaguely remembered the storyline so reading it jump started my memory and I remembered who did it, but I still enjoyed the way it unraveled in the book.

I didn't like this book as Walt didn't really sheriff or investigate. He was more interested in starting a relationship. I don't like when mysteries don't focus on the case at hand. The TV show was better.
funny mysterious fast-paced

3/3/23: This time I decided to read this book by audio and it was so much fun. The narrator George Guidall was amazing. I had forgotten the humor completely but it charmed me. The writing is on the simple side which makes it perfect for the audiobook experience. The storytelling was fun and I love all of the characters. I am excited to continue the series.

1/16/2016: I could not get into this book and it has taken me weeks to read. I am still stuck in the fantasy genre so maybe it is all me? The ending totally caught me by surprise and it was my favorite part. I do plan to read the rest of the books, but at this time I am going to wait.

My third Longmire. Love Johnson's charming characters and writing (glad that over time he overwrites less!).

Much more humour in the books than in the television series!

I enjoyed the story a lot. Growing up in the town Durant is patterned after, it was fun to recognize the characters and locations of people and places I knew. I will read more of the series. I do wish there was a bit less language and fewer innuendos, but the mystery and the “old west” were well done. I really like the main characters and am looking forward to their continued adventures.
