SUCH a solid start to the series, and entry into the grishaverse.

I knew next to nothing about this series before starting it, but I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entirety of this book.

It’s fairly fast paced, with lots of twists and turns near the end. The characters are well written and the magic system is so intriguing. Miss Leigh never fails to write a good story.

I think at times the FMC irritated me and that’s why this book wasn’t quite a 5 star. It’s also quite a short book so I really wasn’t expecting anything revolutionary, but this was a really great book. Super easy to comprehend what was happening, very beginner fantasy friendly as well.

The touch of romance in there too was not asked for but well appreciated as well

I really enjoyed this book - some of the plot was predictable and I wasn't super sold on the love story. However, the pacing was great which made it a super quick read. I also enjoyed the relationships between the characters. The magic system felt really fresh and overall not your usual fantasy set up. I am looking forward to the next installment.

I always prefer to start my reviews with a general picture of the plot. In this case, there is no plot. Nothing happens in the first two-thirds of the book, and nothing unpredictable or even a tiny bit interesting happens after that. The main character is a disgustingly annoying, unrelatable piece of pick-me trash, and the rest are as by all means stereotypical as you can imagine.
Still, the first book in a series is always way worse than the rest, so I don't blame this failure on the Grishaverse as a whole. I really hope it makes up for this one.

Love love love. I don’t have anything bad to say about this. Alina Starkov is such a picture heroine. Why does my heart yearn for the toxic, dark haired, villain? This book tugs all the right heartstrings and I could not recommend this enough!

4.5, a mi me gustó mucho, solo siento que le falto un poco de explicacion a la magia y a la politica. Alina me desespera un poco, y obvio me encanta el oscuro. Deseosa de seguir la saga

Wow. I've been needing some good fantasy like this for awhile. A grand adventure with awesome mystery and magic plus a little touch of romance. Expect a few cliches but plenty of originality. I'm glad I borrowed the whole series from my library.

I loved that this book had many different external conflicts that all circled back to the internal one: an orphan girl desperate for affection.
