1.75 stars,
I’m not the biggest fan of fantasy, that may be the reason I didn’t like this book

Why did I wait so long to read this? Well I know why I only heard about it last year lol but oh my god! I am so like oh my god this book. I love this book it is amazing, the world and everything like it’s perfect. Almost perfect. My goodreads updates are quite funny I updated it quite a bit to this story just because I couldn’t control my feels. At one point I put the book down for a while to like reconnect with life again.

The plot, I have never read anything like this before, it was so complex and yet so easy to understand, the twists and turns just it pulled me into the story. This isn’t like a normal dystopian I would say, it’s in its own league of something else. I wish I had known about this when it first came out because I would have devoured this book like I did.

The world building is fantastic, I also like that we get a little map in the beginning of the book of the places in this book and I looked at it once before starting the book and that was it, I think looked at it after reading the book so I could see a little better in my mind. This world is so complex and brilliant, (feel like that is all I’m saying through this review) it was so thought out and I didn’t struggle with getting to know this world like I sometimes do with other stories. It is well formatted and well thought of and it was perfect. I also love the magic system of this world and how different it can be.

The Darkling, oh my god I love this dude. Like when I was reading this I just kept saying am I meant to like this dude? Like I feel like I shouldn’t but I do. And yeah he’s very bad but I love him. I see how he’s managed to live for like ever, he’s so seductive without even need to be trying, despite knowing all the bad things about him and what he had planned I still love him. This is a likeable bad guy, like so likeable I would stand next to him and destroy the world really this is how much I love him. LEIGH BARDUGO WHAT DID YOU DO? This character was so complex and so amazing like I have no bad word to say about him. Although he’s evil and just wants to basically rule the world. That’s okay with me. He is an amazing character. (Side note: I wouldn’t stand by and watch someone destroy the world.)

Mal I had mixed feelings about him through the first half of the book I was like he is a dickhead but nice to Alina and when he shouts at Alina just before she leaves the castle and I was like this dude is an asshole. He is shouting at her for trying to fit into a new world she was thrown into?! I was like man he’s a geezer. Then my opinion changed when she escaped and he found her my heart was like aww that is so sweet and perfect. I really changed my opinion of him in the second half of the book and I began to like him a lot more than I had done.

Alina, this is where my problem comes. She doesn’t seem to have any opinions of her own. She is told to do stuff told to think stuff she never really has a solid opinion on her own and this really bugs me, she doesn’t really question things and I feel that’s very problematic. Other than that I really like Alina’s character and her sass with the other girls, I feel like her being thrown into another and a different world she handled it very well especially with the new magic she had to get used to which I loved.

Genya oh my god I loved her, the way she treated Alina and took care of her, I loved it and the fact she is understanding and the fact she is there when Alina needed some rest from the other Grisha girls. I loved her character and the way she spoke of the Queen just made me laugh, I’m kind of glad we didn’t get to see much of the King and Queen because I would probably just hate them too.

I will definitely be carrying on with this series and I loved it and I cannot wait to read book 2 and 3 and carry on with this world.
